More than three years after he finished an epic journey across six continents, Briton Robert Garside has been officiallyrecognized as the first person to run around the world.
Garside, 40, who during his quest called himself the Runningman, on Monday received the approval of Guinness WorldRecords for a 30,000-mile (48,000-km) six-year trek.
"It feels very, very good indeed," Garside told Reuters shortly after hearing the news.
"I'm really happy about this, this run cost me everything," said the former London policeman who was jailed in China, shot atin Russia and chased by armed men in Mexico and Panama during the mega jog which ended in New Delhi in 2003.
The Guinness verdict was a major vindication for Garside, who has been dogged by accusations of cheating by endurancerunners skeptical about a man who claimed to have run through jungles and across deserts with no support team.
Others accused him of embellishing his exploits and of skipping whole sections of the run, something Garside denies.
Garside, who is planning a book and a film of his exploits, kept meticulous records, including eyewitness statements andmore than 300 hours of video footage which Guinness used to authenticate the run.
"It's been a long process, but it was very well documented and it has now been recognized officially as the first fullyauthenticated run around the world," said a spokeswoman for Guinness World Records.
Garside, who described the run as "just like going for a jog every day and not going back home" said it took him two years torecover physically and mentally from his exertions.
Garside, who met his future wife while running through Venezuela in 2000, said one of the hardest moments came in theHimalayas. "It was very cold and I was lonely and it's difficult to find motivation at times like that."
"But it all finally paid off and I'll be running over to Guinness tomorrow to collect my certificate," he said.

Comedian Eddie Griffin saw his life (and his bank account) flash before his eyes Monday after he smashed a $1.5 millionFerrari Enzo into a concrete wall during a charity event at Irwindale Speedway, leaving the ultra-expensive sports car asmoking pile of twisted metal.
The high-speed collision, captured on tape by KCBS in Los Angeles took place during rehearsals for a charity event called"Race for a Cause." Griffin, who starred in "Undercover Brother" and "Norbit," left the crash scene in an ambulance,although he did not suffer any serious injuries and seemed to be in good spirits.
The luxury automobiles used in the charity event were part of a promotion for the film "Redline," a movie about the high-endworld of high-performance sports cars.
Viewpoint - If I was the company that insured this car I would probably cry.

Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith died of an accidental drug overdose after she was found unresponsive at a hotel,authorities said Monday.
"We found nothing to indicate any foul play," said Chief Charlie Tiger of the Seminole police department.
Neither Tiger nor Broward County Medical Examiner Joshua Perper immediately said what drug or drugs were involved in herdeath. Perper said the detailed autopsy showed no evidence of disease.
Smith, 39, had been found unresponsive Feb. 8 in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood.
The weeks after her death that day were filled with public courtroom drama and private whispers about what might have killedher. Officials delayed releasing the autopsy results because of additional evidence, not publicly released.
Perper's initial examination had revealed no serious injuries to her body. Perper said then that prescription drugs, but noillegal drugs, were found in Smith's hotel room, though he wouldn't identify them.
Smith had arrived at the Hard Rock on Feb. 5 and planned to leave four days later aboard a new yacht that her companionHoward K. Stern was arranging to buy. She was seldom seen outside her room during her stay: She was said tobe suffering from a stomach flu before she died.
Because her death was so sudden, and because her 20-year-old son Daniel died under suspicious circumstances fivemonths earlier, there has been speculation about possible criminal activity surrounding the deaths. The Seminole Police Departmentinvestigated the case because the casino is on tribal land.
An inquest into Daniel's death is scheduled to start Tuesday in the Bahamas, where he died.
Smith grew up in Texas and went from topless dancer to Playboy Playmate of the Year, Guess jeans model and bride of 89-year-old oilman J. Howard Marshall II. She took her fight for Marshall's estimated $500 million fortune as far as the SupremeCourt, and the ongoing battle could make her infant daughter, Dannielynn, very wealthy. Stern and two other menhave claimed to be the baby's father.

Dr. Perper says Anna's temperature went down after the first tough night at the Hard Rock, but she exhibited vomiting and asthe week wore on her condition deteriorated. On the last day of her life, Thursday, February 8, Dr. Perper says Howard K.Stern woke up at 10:00 AM and found Anna awake. Stern helped her to the bathroom and then she went back to bed andwent to sleep.
Dr. Perper says Stern left the room and didn't return until after 911 was called.

Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith died of an accidental drug overdose after she was found unresponsive at a hotel,authorities said Monday.
"We found nothing to indicate any foul play," said Chief Charlie Tiger of the Seminole police department.
Neither Tiger nor Broward County Medical Examiner Joshua Perper immediately said what drug or drugs were involved in herdeath. Perper said the detailed autopsy showed no evidence of disease.
Smith, 39, had been found unresponsive Feb. 8 in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood.
The weeks after her death that day were filled with public courtroom drama and private whispers about what might have killedher. Officials delayed releasing the autopsy results because of additional evidence, not publicly released.
Perper's initial examination had revealed no serious injuries to her body. Perper said then that prescription drugs, but noillegal drugs, were found in Smith's hotel room, though he wouldn't identify them.
Smith had arrived at the Hard Rock on Feb. 5 and planned to leave four days later aboard a new yacht that her companionHoward K. Stern was arranging to buy. She was seldom seen outside her room during her stay: She was said tobe suffering from a stomach flu before she died.
Because her death was so sudden, and because her 20-year-old son Daniel died under suspicious circumstances fivemonths earlier, there has been speculation about possible criminal activity surrounding the deaths. The Seminole Police Departmentinvestigated the case because the casino is on tribal land.
An inquest into Daniel's death is scheduled to start Tuesday in the Bahamas, where he died.
Smith grew up in Texas and went from topless dancer to Playboy Playmate of the Year, Guess jeans model and bride of 89-year-old oilman J. Howard Marshall II. She took her fight for Marshall's estimated $500 million fortune as far as the SupremeCourt, and the ongoing battle could make her infant daughter, Dannielynn, very wealthy. Stern and two other menhave claimed to be the baby's father.

Dr. Perper says Anna's temperature went down after the first tough night at the Hard Rock, but she exhibited vomiting and asthe week wore on her condition deteriorated. On the last day of her life, Thursday, February 8, Dr. Perper says Howard K.Stern woke up at 10:00 AM and found Anna awake. Stern helped her to the bathroom and then she went back to bed andwent to sleep.
Dr. Perper says Stern left the room and didn't return until after 911 was called.

France became the first country to open its files on UFOs Thursday when the national space agency unveiled a websitedocumenting more than 1,600 sightings spanning five decades.
The online archives, which will be updated as new cases are reported, catalogues in minute detail cases ranging from theeasily dismissed to a handful that continue to perplex even hard-nosed scientists.
"It is a world first," said Jacques Patenet, the aeronautical engineer who heads the office for the study of "non-identifiedaerospatial phenomena."
Known as OVNIs in French, UFOs have always generated intense interest along with countless conspiracy theories aboutsecretive government cover-ups of findings deemed too sensitive or alarming for public consumption.
"Cases such as the lady who reported seeing an object that looked like a flying roll of toilet paper" are clearly not worthinvestigating, said Patenet.
But many others involving multiple sightings -- in at least one case involving thousands of people across France -- andevidence such as burn marks and radar trackings showing flight patterns or accelerations that defy the laws of physicsare taken very seriously.
A phalanx of beefy security guards formed a barrier in front of the space agency (CNES) headquarters where theannouncement was made, "to screen out uninvited UFOlogists," an official explained.
Of the 1,600 cases registered since 1954, nearly 25 percent are classified as "type D", meaning that "despite good or verygood data and credible witnesses, we are confronted with something we can't explain," Patenet said.
On January 8, 1981 outside the town of Trans-en-Provence in southern France, for example, a man working in a field reportedhearing a strange whistling sound and seeing a saucer-like object about 2.5 meters (eight feet) in diameter land in hisfield about 50 meters (yards) away.
A dull-zinc grey, the saucer took off, he told police, almost immediately, leaving burn marks. Investigators took photos, andthen collected and analyzed samples, and to this day no satisfactory explanation has been made.
The nearly 1,000 witness who said they saw flashing lights in the sky on November 5, 1990, by contrast, had simply seen arocket fragment falling back into earth's atmosphere.
Patenet's answer to questions about evidence of life beyond Earth was sure to inflame the suspicions of those convinced thegovernment is holding back: "We do not have the least proof that extra-terrestrials are behind the unexplainedphenomena."
But then he added: "Nor do we have the least proof that they aren't."
The CNES fields between 50 and 100 UFO reports ever year, usually written up by police. Of these, 10 percent are the objectof on-site investigations, Patenet said.
Other countries collect data more or less systematically about unidentified flying objects, notably in Britain and in the UnitedStates, where information can be requested on a case-by-case basis under the Freedom of Information Act.
"But we decided to do it the other way around and made everything available to the public," Patenet said.
The aim was to make it easier for scientists and other UFO buffs to access the data for research.
The website itself -- which crashed host servers hours after it was unveiled due to heavy traffic -- is extremely well organizedand complete, even including scanned copies of police reports.

Kid Rock has struck back against a woman who claimed he threw her into a snowbank -- with a lawsuit.
TMZ obtained the lawsuit filed by Rock's attorneys against Kelly Ann Kozlowski, the woman who last week accused Kid ofassaulting her. The musician is seeking undisclosed monetary damages for invasion of privacy, defamation, and fortrespassing the Rock residence.
In a police report, Kozlowski had claimed that Kid (whose real name is Robert Ritchie) grabbed her by the neck and threw herinto a snowbank, charges that Rock denied -- and that were ultimately unsubstantiated. According to the Rock lawsuit,after meeting the rap-rocker at a local bar, Kozlowski and her boyfriend tagged along to listen to some tracks Rockhad recently recorded, but "began placing drinks on [Rock's] recording equipment and was otherwise acting improperly."
This inappropriate behavior got Kozlowski kicked out of Chateau Kid, but not before she threatened to "sue him, or words tothat effect."

Don King got a front row seat at Pope Benedict XVI's general audience Wednesday.
The usually flamboyant boxing promoter, wearing a blue suit with his preferred high hair style primly flattened for the papalevent, gave the pope a green-and-gold boxing belt and a handwritten letter asking for prayers for people ranging fromPresident Bush to the world's sick and aged.
"I was thrilled to be there. It was a deep spiritual experience," King told The Associated Press after the two-hour open-airaudience in St. Peter's Square.
In Rome to discuss possible boxing matches in Italy, King had expressed his wish to meet with the pope.
"Faith is the thing that carries us through," the 75-year-old King said as he walked through St. Peter's Square, waving Italianand Vatican flags and signing autographs.
Don King Productions spokesman Alan Hopper said the Vatican visit was arranged through a boxer King represents -- Italiansuper welterweight champion Luca Messi, whose brother Alessandro is a Catholic priest.

Hours earlier, a sleepless night had been born outof the disgust of a double-overtime loss to the Suns, one of those games that rustled the spirits of playoffs past, that fedinto the fury of Dwyane Wade 's resounding rip on his NBA finals failure.
For a moment here, though, the Mavericks star allowed himself to rewind three years to when Nash, his best friend, leftDallas for the desert. Nash's fleeing for free agency has been played out so many times, with all the reasons and regrets, butNowitzki is forever left with, "What if?"
"We both love the teams we play with, but sometimes you think of what could've been if we stayed together," he said. "Wouldwe have won a championship or not? Sometimes, I go through it in my mind …"
It wouldn't be long the other day until he snapped back that faraway gaze, because even without Nash running these Mavs,Nowitzki is still lording over the deepest, most versatile roster in the league. He's still in the midst of an MVP season, agreatness that has sculpted a prototype for the European basketball player in the NBA.
Here in the quiet of American Airlines Center, Nowitzki reflected on growing from a lost teen, fresh out of Germany who inmuch of the league's eyes had arrived in the 1998 NBA draft as something of a science project in Don Nelson's laboratory.
Across his nine seasons, he has done everything a player must do for to reach a superstar's standing in this league -everything short of winning a championship. That's the threshold for him now, and he has himself and the Mavs on the cusp.Maybe most of all, Nowitzki has made America see that a European could be a franchise player, the cornerstone of achampionship contender.
As much as anyone in the NBA today, in his own way, Nowitzki changed the game.
"You have to give Nellie a lot of credit: I don't think there were a lot of coaches then who would've let a 7-footer just dribble upthe ball and jack up a three," he said. "He helped me find my game and develop it into something that really hasn't beendone before.
"If I would've gone somewhere else, they would've made me a back-to-the-basket power forward and tried to punch it into thepaint with me. Nellie didn't think that was my game and gave me all the freedom. I owe him a lot."
Without Nowitzki, there's no Andrea Bargnani of Italy getting drafted No. 1 in Toronto and getting to play beyond the three-point line at 7-foot without a disparaging word. Nowitzki gave Bargnani, gave the next wave, legitimacy.
Now, he makes his bid for the final frontier for the European star. At 28 years old, he has averaged 25.2 points and 9.7rebounds a game this season. As long as the Mavericks, 54-11 now, hold off the Suns and Nash for the No. 1 seed in theWest, Nowitzki deserves to finally earn his first Most Valuable Player award.
"What has changed is that they do believe that guy can come over and be franchise players," he said. "That wasn't the casebefore, but now, they know we're good enough to carry teams over here."

Sources tell TMZ that Letterman came into the office today, but didn't feel up to hosting. It was the last scheduled taping forthe week, so Dave thought it best to get the extra rest.
Sandler's guests will be his "Reign Over Me" co-star Don Cheadle, comedian Todd Barry, race car driver Danica Patrick andsinger Lucinda Williams.

For a moment here, though, the Mavericks star allowed himself to rewind three years to when Nash, his best friend, leftDallas for the desert. Nash's fleeing for free agency has been played out so many times, with all the reasons and regrets, butNowitzki is forever left with, "What if?"
"We both love the teams we play with, but sometimes you think of what could've been if we stayed together," he said. "Wouldwe have won a championship or not? Sometimes, I go through it in my mind …"
It wouldn't be long the other day until he snapped back that faraway gaze, because even without Nash running these Mavs,Nowitzki is still lording over the deepest, most versatile roster in the league. He's still in the midst of an MVP season, agreatness that has sculpted a prototype for the European basketball player in the NBA.
Here in the quiet of American Airlines Center, Nowitzki reflected on growing from a lost teen, fresh out of Germany who inmuch of the league's eyes had arrived in the 1998 NBA draft as something of a science project in Don Nelson's laboratory.
Across his nine seasons, he has done everything a player must do for to reach a superstar's standing in this league -everything short of winning a championship. That's the threshold for him now, and he has himself and the Mavs on the cusp.Maybe most of all, Nowitzki has made America see that a European could be a franchise player, the cornerstone of achampionship contender.
As much as anyone in the NBA today, in his own way, Nowitzki changed the game.
"You have to give Nellie a lot of credit: I don't think there were a lot of coaches then who would've let a 7-footer just dribble upthe ball and jack up a three," he said. "He helped me find my game and develop it into something that really hasn't beendone before.
"If I would've gone somewhere else, they would've made me a back-to-the-basket power forward and tried to punch it into thepaint with me. Nellie didn't think that was my game and gave me all the freedom. I owe him a lot."
Without Nowitzki, there's no Andrea Bargnani of Italy getting drafted No. 1 in Toronto and getting to play beyond the three-point line at 7-foot without a disparaging word. Nowitzki gave Bargnani, gave the next wave, legitimacy.
Now, he makes his bid for the final frontier for the European star. At 28 years old, he has averaged 25.2 points and 9.7rebounds a game this season. As long as the Mavericks, 54-11 now, hold off the Suns and Nash for the No. 1 seed in theWest, Nowitzki deserves to finally earn his first Most Valuable Player award.
