France became the first country to open its files on UFOs Thursday when the national space agency unveiled a websitedocumenting more than 1,600 sightings spanning five decades.
The online archives, which will be updated as new cases are reported, catalogues in minute detail cases ranging from theeasily dismissed to a handful that continue to perplex even hard-nosed scientists.
"It is a world first," said Jacques Patenet, the aeronautical engineer who heads the office for the study of "non-identifiedaerospatial phenomena."
Known as OVNIs in French, UFOs have always generated intense interest along with countless conspiracy theories aboutsecretive government cover-ups of findings deemed too sensitive or alarming for public consumption.
"Cases such as the lady who reported seeing an object that looked like a flying roll of toilet paper" are clearly not worthinvestigating, said Patenet.
But many others involving multiple sightings -- in at least one case involving thousands of people across France -- andevidence such as burn marks and radar trackings showing flight patterns or accelerations that defy the laws of physicsare taken very seriously.
A phalanx of beefy security guards formed a barrier in front of the space agency (CNES) headquarters where theannouncement was made, "to screen out uninvited UFOlogists," an official explained.
Of the 1,600 cases registered since 1954, nearly 25 percent are classified as "type D", meaning that "despite good or verygood data and credible witnesses, we are confronted with something we can't explain," Patenet said.
On January 8, 1981 outside the town of Trans-en-Provence in southern France, for example, a man working in a field reportedhearing a strange whistling sound and seeing a saucer-like object about 2.5 meters (eight feet) in diameter land in hisfield about 50 meters (yards) away.
A dull-zinc grey, the saucer took off, he told police, almost immediately, leaving burn marks. Investigators took photos, andthen collected and analyzed samples, and to this day no satisfactory explanation has been made.
The nearly 1,000 witness who said they saw flashing lights in the sky on November 5, 1990, by contrast, had simply seen arocket fragment falling back into earth's atmosphere.
Patenet's answer to questions about evidence of life beyond Earth was sure to inflame the suspicions of those convinced thegovernment is holding back: "We do not have the least proof that extra-terrestrials are behind the unexplainedphenomena."
But then he added: "Nor do we have the least proof that they aren't."
The CNES fields between 50 and 100 UFO reports ever year, usually written up by police. Of these, 10 percent are the objectof on-site investigations, Patenet said.
Other countries collect data more or less systematically about unidentified flying objects, notably in Britain and in the UnitedStates, where information can be requested on a case-by-case basis under the Freedom of Information Act.
"But we decided to do it the other way around and made everything available to the public," Patenet said.
The aim was to make it easier for scientists and other UFO buffs to access the data for research.
The website itself -- which crashed host servers hours after it was unveiled due to heavy traffic -- is extremely well organizedand complete, even including scanned copies of police reports.

Kid Rock has struck back against a woman who claimed he threw her into a snowbank -- with a lawsuit.
TMZ obtained the lawsuit filed by Rock's attorneys against Kelly Ann Kozlowski, the woman who last week accused Kid ofassaulting her. The musician is seeking undisclosed monetary damages for invasion of privacy, defamation, and fortrespassing the Rock residence.
In a police report, Kozlowski had claimed that Kid (whose real name is Robert Ritchie) grabbed her by the neck and threw herinto a snowbank, charges that Rock denied -- and that were ultimately unsubstantiated. According to the Rock lawsuit,after meeting the rap-rocker at a local bar, Kozlowski and her boyfriend tagged along to listen to some tracks Rockhad recently recorded, but "began placing drinks on [Rock's] recording equipment and was otherwise acting improperly."
This inappropriate behavior got Kozlowski kicked out of Chateau Kid, but not before she threatened to "sue him, or words tothat effect."

Don King got a front row seat at Pope Benedict XVI's general audience Wednesday.
The usually flamboyant boxing promoter, wearing a blue suit with his preferred high hair style primly flattened for the papalevent, gave the pope a green-and-gold boxing belt and a handwritten letter asking for prayers for people ranging fromPresident Bush to the world's sick and aged.
"I was thrilled to be there. It was a deep spiritual experience," King told The Associated Press after the two-hour open-airaudience in St. Peter's Square.
In Rome to discuss possible boxing matches in Italy, King had expressed his wish to meet with the pope.
"Faith is the thing that carries us through," the 75-year-old King said as he walked through St. Peter's Square, waving Italianand Vatican flags and signing autographs.
Don King Productions spokesman Alan Hopper said the Vatican visit was arranged through a boxer King represents -- Italiansuper welterweight champion Luca Messi, whose brother Alessandro is a Catholic priest.
King was seated in the front row of a special section on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica. He was able to hand the pope thegift and the letter as Benedict drove slowly by in an open jeep at the end of the audience.
King, who spent four years in prison for manslaughter, had hoped for a personal meeting with Benedict. Very few nonchurchpeople, however, receive private time with the pope during his Wednesday audiences.
Before arriving in Rome, King toured Messi's hometown, Bergamo. During the visit to the northern Italian city, King began afundraising campaign to restore the city's church of St. Mary Major, which includes frescoed paintings on the walls of a pre-existing church buried underneath.

Don King got a front row seat at Pope Benedict XVI's general audience Wednesday.
The usually flamboyant boxing promoter, wearing a blue suit with his preferred high hair style primly flattened for the papalevent, gave the pope a green-and-gold boxing belt and a handwritten letter asking for prayers for people ranging fromPresident Bush to the world's sick and aged.

DALLAS - Here was Dirk Nowitzki , eyes tired, voice soft, sitting at a table in the Dallas Mavericks ' offices with his mindrunning through the way that Steve Nash had again broken his heart. Hours earlier, a sleepless night had been born outof the disgust of a double-overtime loss to the Suns, one of those games that rustled the spirits of playoffs past, that fedinto the fury of Dwyane Wade 's resounding rip on his NBA finals failure.
For a moment here, though, the Mavericks star allowed himself to rewind three years to when Nash, his best friend, leftDallas for the desert. Nash's fleeing for free agency has been played out so many times, with all the reasons and regrets, butNowitzki is forever left with, "What if?"
"We both love the teams we play with, but sometimes you think of what could've been if we stayed together," he said. "Wouldwe have won a championship or not? Sometimes, I go through it in my mind …"
It wouldn't be long the other day until he snapped back that faraway gaze, because even without Nash running these Mavs,Nowitzki is still lording over the deepest, most versatile roster in the league. He's still in the midst of an MVP season, agreatness that has sculpted a prototype for the European basketball player in the NBA.
Here in the quiet of American Airlines Center, Nowitzki reflected on growing from a lost teen, fresh out of Germany who inmuch of the league's eyes had arrived in the 1998 NBA draft as something of a science project in Don Nelson's laboratory.
Across his nine seasons, he has done everything a player must do for to reach a superstar's standing in this league -everything short of winning a championship. That's the threshold for him now, and he has himself and the Mavs on the cusp.Maybe most of all, Nowitzki has made America see that a European could be a franchise player, the cornerstone of achampionship contender.
As much as anyone in the NBA today, in his own way, Nowitzki changed the game.
"You have to give Nellie a lot of credit: I don't think there were a lot of coaches then who would've let a 7-footer just dribble upthe ball and jack up a three," he said. "He helped me find my game and develop it into something that really hasn't beendone before.
"If I would've gone somewhere else, they would've made me a back-to-the-basket power forward and tried to punch it into thepaint with me. Nellie didn't think that was my game and gave me all the freedom. I owe him a lot."
Without Nowitzki, there's no Andrea Bargnani of Italy getting drafted No. 1 in Toronto and getting to play beyond the three-point line at 7-foot without a disparaging word. Nowitzki gave Bargnani, gave the next wave, legitimacy.
Now, he makes his bid for the final frontier for the European star. At 28 years old, he has averaged 25.2 points and 9.7rebounds a game this season. As long as the Mavericks, 54-11 now, hold off the Suns and Nash for the No. 1 seed in theWest, Nowitzki deserves to finally earn his first Most Valuable Player award.
"What has changed is that they do believe that guy can come over and be franchise players," he said. "That wasn't the casebefore, but now, they know we're good enough to carry teams over here."
After hearing Nowitzki lament letting those 2006 finals to the Heat slip away, Wade left everyone stunned with such a pointed,personal response to Nowitzki this season. The Mavs star raised his hand, took the blame, but somehow Wadedecided this was a slight of the Heat. Of course, Dallas had Miami down two games to nothing, had them down doublefigures late in Game 3, before everything collapsed.
"… Dirk says they gave us the championship last year, but he's the reason they lost the championship," Wade said,"because he wasn't the leader that he's supposed to be in the closing moments."
Even now, Nowitzki sounds confused on how the mild-mannered Wade turned something so benign into something nastilypersonal.
"I thought he reacted really, really sensitive to what I said," Nowitzki said. "Everybody knows we had the series in control. … Ithought I said something that we all felt.
"I wasn't going to go back at him again. That's not me."
Of course, Nowitzki rolled his eyes and laughed when it was suggested that his boss, Mark Cuban, couldn't so easily letWade's words go. The owner of the Mavericks hustled to Dirk's defense, blasting Wade in his blog. It was classic,combative Cuban - over the top and endlessly entertaining.
"(Cuban) probably shouldn't have said what he said," Nowitzki said. "Even by responding to that, it looks like (Wade) reallygot to us."
Beneath it all, you wonder if Wade himself still clings to those lingering stereotypes that a Euro is too soft, that he isn't cutout to burden an NBA championship. Wade wouldn't be alone in that thinking, and Nowitzki understands that none of that goesaway until he's holding that trophy over his head this June, until Dirk Nowitzki goes the complete distance.

David Letterman has come down with a stomach virus and won't host "The Late Show" tonight, so Adam Sandler will take hisplace, TMZ has learned.
Sources tell TMZ that Letterman came into the office today, but didn't feel up to hosting. It was the last scheduled taping forthe week, so Dave thought it best to get the extra rest.
Sandler's guests will be his "Reign Over Me" co-star Don Cheadle, comedian Todd Barry, race car driver Danica Patrick andsinger Lucinda Williams.

It wouldn't be long the other day until he snapped back that faraway gaze, because even without Nash running these Mavs,Nowitzki is still lording over the deepest, most versatile roster in the league. He's still in the midst of an MVP season, agreatness that has sculpted a prototype for the European basketball player in the NBA.
Here in the quiet of American Airlines Center, Nowitzki reflected on growing from a lost teen, fresh out of Germany who inmuch of the league's eyes had arrived in the 1998 NBA draft as something of a science project in Don Nelson's laboratory.
Across his nine seasons, he has done everything a player must do for to reach a superstar's standing in this league -everything short of winning a championship. That's the threshold for him now, and he has himself and the Mavs on the cusp.Maybe most of all, Nowitzki has made America see that a European could be a franchise player, the cornerstone of achampionship contender.
As much as anyone in the NBA today, in his own way, Nowitzki changed the game.
"You have to give Nellie a lot of credit: I don't think there were a lot of coaches then who would've let a 7-footer just dribble upthe ball and jack up a three," he said. "He helped me find my game and develop it into something that really hasn't beendone before.
"If I would've gone somewhere else, they would've made me a back-to-the-basket power forward and tried to punch it into thepaint with me. Nellie didn't think that was my game and gave me all the freedom. I owe him a lot."
Without Nowitzki, there's no Andrea Bargnani of Italy getting drafted No. 1 in Toronto and getting to play beyond the three-point line at 7-foot without a disparaging word. Nowitzki gave Bargnani, gave the next wave, legitimacy.
Now, he makes his bid for the final frontier for the European star. At 28 years old, he has averaged 25.2 points and 9.7rebounds a game this season. As long as the Mavericks, 54-11 now, hold off the Suns and Nash for the No. 1 seed in theWest, Nowitzki deserves to finally earn his first Most Valuable Player award.
"What has changed is that they do believe that guy can come over and be franchise players," he said. "That wasn't the casebefore, but now, they know we're good enough to carry teams over here."
After hearing Nowitzki lament letting those 2006 finals to the Heat slip away, Wade left everyone stunned with such a pointed,personal response to Nowitzki this season. The Mavs star raised his hand, took the blame, but somehow Wadedecided this was a slight of the Heat. Of course, Dallas had Miami down two games to nothing, had them down doublefigures late in Game 3, before everything collapsed.
"… Dirk says they gave us the championship last year, but he's the reason they lost the championship," Wade said,"because he wasn't the leader that he's supposed to be in the closing moments."
Even now, Nowitzki sounds confused on how the mild-mannered Wade turned something so benign into something nastilypersonal.
"I thought he reacted really, really sensitive to what I said," Nowitzki said. "Everybody knows we had the series in control. … Ithought I said something that we all felt.
"I wasn't going to go back at him again. That's not me."
Of course, Nowitzki rolled his eyes and laughed when it was suggested that his boss, Mark Cuban, couldn't so easily letWade's words go. The owner of the Mavericks hustled to Dirk's defense, blasting Wade in his blog. It was classic,combative Cuban - over the top and endlessly entertaining.
"(Cuban) probably shouldn't have said what he said," Nowitzki said. "Even by responding to that, it looks like (Wade) reallygot to us."
Beneath it all, you wonder if Wade himself still clings to those lingering stereotypes that a Euro is too soft, that he isn't cutout to burden an NBA championship. Wade wouldn't be alone in that thinking, and Nowitzki understands that none of that goesaway until he's holding that trophy over his head this June, until Dirk Nowitzki goes the complete distance.

After four years of intensive collaboration, 18 top mathematicians and computer scientists from the United States and Europehave successfully mapped E8, one of the largest and most complicated structures in mathematics, scientists saidlate Sunday.
Jeffrey Adams, project leader and mathematics professor at the University of Maryland said E8 was discovered over a centuryago, in 1887, and until now, no one thought the structure could ever be understood.
"This groundbreaking achievement is significant both as an advance in basic knowledge, as well as a major advance in theuse of large scale computing to solve complicated mathematical problems," Adams said.
He added that the mapping of E8 may well have unforeseen implications in mathematics and physics which won't be evidentfor years to come.
E8 belongs to so-called Lie groups that were invented by a 19th century Norwegian mathematician, Sophus Lie, to studysymmetry.
The theory holds that underlying any symmetrical object, such as a sphere, is a Lie group.
Balls, cylinders or cones are familiar examples of symmetric three-dimensional objects.
However, mathematicians study symmetries in higher dimensions. In fact, E8 itself is 248-dimensional.
Today string theorists search for a theory of the universe by looking at E8 X E8.
The scientists said the magnitude of the E8 calculation invited comparison with the Human Genome Project.
While the human genome, which contains all the genetic information of a cell, is less than a gigabyte in size, the result of theE8 calculation, which contains all the information about E8, is 60 gigabytes in size, they said.
This is enough to store 45 days of continuous music in MP3-format. If written out on paper, the answer would cover an areathe size of Manhattan.

Google Inc. is developing its own mobile phone, according to industry insiders and analysts, while a Google official in Spainlast week acknowledged the company is "investigating" such a project.
Google isn't commenting directly on leaks from Europe and the United States which describe a low-cost, Internet-connectedphone with a color, wide-screen design. Newspaper and blog reports in recent months have Google shopping itsphone design to potential mobile phone manufacturing partners in Asia.
"Mobile is an important area for Google," Google spokeswoman Erin Fors said on Friday. "We remain focused on creatingapplications and establishing and growing partnerships with industry leaders to develop innovative services for usersworldwide. However, we have nothing further to announce."
Gadget enthusiasts who only two months ago were obsessed with the potential revolutionary impact on the phone industry ofApple Inc.'s iPhone device -- due out in June and at prices starting at $500 -- have shifted their attention to whether Googleis developing an even lower-cost phone.
"We obviously need another mythical mobile to drool over and speculate about -- and the natural candidate is, of course, theso-called Google phone," geek hardware site Engadget wrote earlier this month.
To be sure, feverish speculation about Google products has been wrong before. Google was widely reported to be building itsown line of personal computers a little over a year ago. What in fact materialized was a set of free software programsdesigned to make any existing Windows PCs easier to use.
But Richard Windsor, a phone analyst with brokerage Nomura in London, told clients late last week that unspecified Googlerepresentatives at a major European conference in Germany had confirmed the company is working on its own phonedevice.
"Google has come out of the closet at the CeBIT trade fair admitting that it is working on a mobile phone of its own," Windsorsaid in a note entitled "Google Phone: From myth to reality."
"This is not going to be a high-end device but a mass market device aimed at bringing Google to users who don't have a PC,"he said.
Over the past year, Google has branched out beyond computers to bring Web search, e-mail, mapping and other Webservices to millions of new and existing phone browsers worldwide. Rivals Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc.(Nasdaq:YHOO - news) also are racing to run Web services on mobile phones.
Simeon Simeonov, a Boston-based venture capitalist with Polaris Venture Partners, said that an "inside source close to thecompany" had informed him that Google was developing a "Blackberry-like, slick device."
The device Simeonov describes could handle voice over Internet phone-calling. He said it is being developed within a 100-person mobile phone group at Google that includes Andy Rubin, the creator of Sidekick, a popular phone/Internet device thathe developed at a prior company he founded, Danger Inc.
Lending further clues, Isabel Aguilera, head of Google's Iberian operations, was quoted last week in Spanish news siteNoticias.com as acknowledging the existence of a part-time project by some Google engineers to develop a mobilephone.
In her interview translated from Spanish, the Google executive said her company "has been investigating" developing a mobilephone that works both as an Internet access device and as a way to extend Internet use to emerging marketscustomers.
In January, Engadget circulated a photo purporting to be a prototype Internet phone with a wide, color screen designed byGoogle and built by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.. This unconfirmed report replaced an earlier theory published by TheObserver in December that Google was working with Taiwan's High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) on a mobile phone.
A source at a rival Internet company who has talked to the same mobile phone manufacturers said on Friday that "Google isgoing to build their own phone, whether it is with HTC or Samsung or some other ODM (original device manufacturer)."
Windsor, the London-based Nomura analyst who tracks mobile phone handset makers like Nokia of Finland, argues that aGoogle Phone "will meet with limited success and lose money" because it lacks the necessary phone industry relationshipsto reach the massive scale needed to compete.

Google Inc. is developing its own mobile phone, according to industry insiders and analysts, while a Google official in Spainlast week acknowledged the company is "investigating" such a project.
