My last column, "What Credit Card companies Don't Want You to Know," received an overwhelmingly positive response, withclose to 4,000 comments posted in a matter of hours. It's exciting to see so many Yahoo! Finance readers taking anactive role by posting feedback and suggestions.

A Debit Card Boom
I can relate. I also switched to a debit card after getting myself deep into credit card debt when I was in college. By using onlymy debit card, I became more disciplined about spending.
Carol and I aren't alone: Debit card use today is at an all-time high. You may be surprised to know that consumers areactually using debit cards more often than credit cards now. In fact, according to market research firm Mintel, debit carduse surpassed a trillion dollars last year.
The Benefits of Debit Cards
Using a debit card for purchases is convenient, and it keeps you out of debt. After all, you can't spend what you don't have inyour account. There's also no bill to worry about -- which means no interest, no late fee, no over-the-limit fee, no annual fee,and so on. Make a purchase and the money comes directly out of your bank account. What could be simpler?
But the same things that make a debit card so simple to use is also what makes it so risky. When your debit cardinformation is compromised, thieves have direct access to your bank account.
Seven Tips for Debit Card Use
Obviously, it's important to understand the risks of debit card use, and how to protect yourself from those risks. Here areseven tips you need to keep in mind about debit cards
1. Know your debit card's liability policy.
Many banks advertise that they offer "zero liability" debit cards. This means that if an unauthorized charge is made on yourcard and the transaction is signed for, you are not liable for the fraudulent purchase -- much like if you were to use acredit card.
However, it's really important to understand that in most cases, this zero-liability policy only applies to signature-basedtransactions when you're using a debit card with the Visa or MasterCard logo.
This means that if an unauthorized purchase is made using your debit card with your personal identification number (PIN), inmost cases the zero-liability policy won't apply. What's more, the zero-liability policy for debit cards is just that -- a policy,not a federal law.
Ultimately, then, liability for fraudulent transactions are subject to review by the bank that issued the card. That said, it'spossible that your bank offers a zero-liability policy even on PIN transactions, although very few do. Check with your bank.
2. Lose your PIN, lose your money.
Because PIN-based debit card transactions (regulated by the Electronic Funds Transfer Act) generally don't carry the sameprotection as signature-based debit card transactions (regulated by the Truth in Lending Act), you want to do everythingpossible to safeguard that PIN. If your debit card information is stolen along with your PIN and you don't notify yourbank right away, your entire bank account could potentially be wiped out.
According to the law that governs electronic fund transfers, in order to limit your liability you must report suspicious debit carduse for PIN-based transactions to your bank within two business days -- which will only put you on the hook for $50.Losses reported after two days will increase your liability to $500.
That's not all -- if you report unauthorized use of your debit card after 60 days from the time you received your statement, thebank doesn't have to reimburse you at all. In fact, you might even be liable for the maximum overdraft line of credit theyextended to you. It's possible that your bank could have a greater protection policy than what the law requires; check tomake sure you know what yours is.
3. It's easier than you think to have your debit card information stolen.
Your physical debit card doesn't need to be stolen out of your wallet or lost in the mall parking lot in order for your informationto be compromised. This month, the Wall Street Journal ran an article on an increasingly common debit cardscam.
In this scam, criminals attach "skimmers" to the card-swiping devices at grocery stores, gas stations, and even banks.Undetected by consumers, these skimmers copy debit card numbers -- including PINs -- that are entered. Once theskimmer is retrieved by the criminal, the information is sold or used to create fake debit cards. (Actually, this scamapplies to both credit and debit cards. However, thieves prefer to steal debit card information since credit cards are monitored moreclosely by banks.)
So be on the look out for physical tampering at your ATM or checkout line, which could indicate that a skimming device ispresent. Don't use unbranded ATMs, either -- the kind you find in convenience stores or gas stations.
Also be aware of people lurking too closely at ATMs, or even for hidden cameras when you're entering your PIN. Use yourhand to shield the numbers you're entering on the keypad.
4. Check your bank statement online every day.
Does that sound extreme? Trust me, it's not. While you're online checking email every day, take two minutes to log on toyour bank's web site (from a secure computer, of course) and pull up your current statement.
Glance over your recent transactions and make sure they're all legitimate. If you see anything suspicious, call your bankimmediately. Don't wait for your paper statement in the mail. By then it might be too late.
5. Don't let your debit card out of your sight.
Make sure all your debit transactions are handled without the card being taken out of your line of sight. Once you take youreye off the card, anyone who handles it has the opportunity to steal the card information.
6. Check your credit report regularly.
If you suspect that your debit card information has been compromised, report it to the credit bureaus right away. Order a copyof your credit report and monitor it regularly.
For a (genuinely) free credit report, go to AnnualCreditReport.com. They offer a free credit report once every 12 months fromeach of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies, in accordance with the Fair and Accurate CreditTransactions Act.
7. Know when not to use your debit card.
There are certain situations in which it simply makes sense to use your credit card instead of your debit card. If you'remaking a "sight unseen" purchase over the Internet, for example, you have more recourse with a credit card if the item arrives in poorcondition or not at all.
Personally, I never use a debit card for online purchases. It's always much more difficult to have money returned to your bankaccount than to dispute a charge on your credit card statement.
Finally, if you can avoid it, don't use a debit card when paying for a hotel stay, car rental, or even at the gas pump. When youdo, banks put a block on a certain amount of money in your account until the entire transaction is complete and posted --which could take days. In the meantime, your money is tied up and you won't be able to access it, which could lead to feesbeing incurred for an overdrawn account.
When using a credit card in these situations, be sure to pay the balance in full as soon as your bill arrives.

During an appearance in the farming town of Delano, Calif., the Governator was making a speech honoring Cesar Chavez,when a female student who'd been standing onstage suddenly collapsed.
According to CBS, the girl suffered "lock-knee fainting," where one falls after standing still for too long. After helping the girl toher feet, Arnold made a few cracks to the crowd, telling them to "loosen up and relax" and "do some push-ups."

Japanese scientists have developed an oral vaccine for Alzheimer's disease that has proven effective and safe in mice, thedirector of a research institute behind the project said on Thursday.
The team is preparing to move to small-scale clinical trials in humans, possibly this year, said Takeshi Tabira, director of theNational Institute for Longevity Sciences in Aichi, central Japan.
"We hope the Phase I trials go well," Tabira said. "Animals are able to recover their functions after developing symptoms, buthumans are less able to do so. It may be that this only works in the early stages of the disease, when symptoms arelight."
When administered to mice suffering from the disease, which causes dementia and is currently incurable, the vaccinereduced the amount of amyloid plaques in the brain and improved mental function.
Amyloid plaques are believed to be at the root of Alzheimer's -- a growing problem for aging populations around the world. Thedisease affects five million in the United States alone, the Alzheimer's Association said in a report last week.
The treatment did not cause inflammation or bleeding in the brains of the mice, Tabira said.
The vaccine is made by inserting amyloid-producing genes into a non-harmful virus. When taken orally, the virus stimulatesthe immune system to attack and break down the amyloid proteins in the brain, Tabira said.
The treatment was tested on 28 mice genetically modified to develop Alzheimer's disease. Half the animals were given a doseof the vaccine at the age of 10 months, while the control group were not treated.
Three months later, tests showed mental function in the treated mice had returned to levels close to those before theydeveloped Alzheimer's symptoms.
U.S. drugmaker Wyeth and its Irish partner Elan Corp have an Alzheimer's vaccine called ACC-001 in early stage humantrials.
The Japanese research, carried out in conjunction with scientists at Nagoya University and others, is to be published by theFederation of American Societies for Experimental Biology in July.

The world's tallest man, whose search for a bride covered the world, ended up marrying a woman from his home town nearlyhalf his age and more than two feet shorter, Chinese media reported on Wednesday.
Bao Xishun, 56, a 2.36-metre (7-ft, 9-inch) herdsman listed by Guinness World Records as the tallest living man, married a29-year-old saleswoman, the Beijing News said. Both come from Chifeng in Inner Mongolia.
"After sending out marriage advertisements across the world and going through a long selection process, the efforts havefinally paid off," the newspaper said.
It was the first wedding for Bao and his bride, Xia Shujuan, a mere 1.68 metres (5 ft 6 inches) tall.
Bao reached his height in a seven-year spurt that began in his teens and which doctors have yet to explain, according toGuinness.
After a career in the army, where he was recruited for a basketball team, he returned to Inner Mongolia. He now herdslivestock and hires himself out for publicity stunts.
In December, Bao saved the lives of two dolphins by reaching deep into their stomachs with his 1.06-metre (42-inch) long armto pull out pieces of plastic, according to Chinese media.

More than three years after he finished an epic journey across six continents, Briton Robert Garside has been officiallyrecognized as the first person to run around the world.
Garside, 40, who during his quest called himself the Runningman, on Monday received the approval of Guinness WorldRecords for a 30,000-mile (48,000-km) six-year trek.
"It feels very, very good indeed," Garside told Reuters shortly after hearing the news.
"I'm really happy about this, this run cost me everything," said the former London policeman who was jailed in China, shot atin Russia and chased by armed men in Mexico and Panama during the mega jog which ended in New Delhi in 2003.
The Guinness verdict was a major vindication for Garside, who has been dogged by accusations of cheating by endurancerunners skeptical about a man who claimed to have run through jungles and across deserts with no support team.
Others accused him of embellishing his exploits and of skipping whole sections of the run, something Garside denies.
Garside, who is planning a book and a film of his exploits, kept meticulous records, including eyewitness statements andmore than 300 hours of video footage which Guinness used to authenticate the run.
"It's been a long process, but it was very well documented and it has now been recognized officially as the first fullyauthenticated run around the world," said a spokeswoman for Guinness World Records.
Garside, who described the run as "just like going for a jog every day and not going back home" said it took him two years torecover physically and mentally from his exertions.
Garside, who met his future wife while running through Venezuela in 2000, said one of the hardest moments came in theHimalayas. "It was very cold and I was lonely and it's difficult to find motivation at times like that."
"But it all finally paid off and I'll be running over to Guinness tomorrow to collect my certificate," he said.

Comedian Eddie Griffin saw his life (and his bank account) flash before his eyes Monday after he smashed a $1.5 millionFerrari Enzo into a concrete wall during a charity event at Irwindale Speedway, leaving the ultra-expensive sports car asmoking pile of twisted metal.
The high-speed collision, captured on tape by KCBS in Los Angeles took place during rehearsals for a charity event called"Race for a Cause." Griffin, who starred in "Undercover Brother" and "Norbit," left the crash scene in an ambulance,although he did not suffer any serious injuries and seemed to be in good spirits.
The luxury automobiles used in the charity event were part of a promotion for the film "Redline," a movie about the high-endworld of high-performance sports cars.

More than three years after he finished an epic journey across six continents, Briton Robert Garside has been officiallyrecognized as the first person to run around the world.
Garside, 40, who during his quest called himself the Runningman, on Monday received the approval of Guinness WorldRecords for a 30,000-mile (48,000-km) six-year trek.
"It feels very, very good indeed," Garside told Reuters shortly after hearing the news.
"I'm really happy about this, this run cost me everything," said the former London policeman who was jailed in China, shot atin Russia and chased by armed men in Mexico and Panama during the mega jog which ended in New Delhi in 2003.
The Guinness verdict was a major vindication for Garside, who has been dogged by accusations of cheating by endurancerunners skeptical about a man who claimed to have run through jungles and across deserts with no support team.
Others accused him of embellishing his exploits and of skipping whole sections of the run, something Garside denies.
Garside, who is planning a book and a film of his exploits, kept meticulous records, including eyewitness statements andmore than 300 hours of video footage which Guinness used to authenticate the run.
"It's been a long process, but it was very well documented and it has now been recognized officially as the first fullyauthenticated run around the world," said a spokeswoman for Guinness World Records.
Garside, who described the run as "just like going for a jog every day and not going back home" said it took him two years torecover physically and mentally from his exertions.
Garside, who met his future wife while running through Venezuela in 2000, said one of the hardest moments came in theHimalayas. "It was very cold and I was lonely and it's difficult to find motivation at times like that."
"But it all finally paid off and I'll be running over to Guinness tomorrow to collect my certificate," he said.

Comedian Eddie Griffin saw his life (and his bank account) flash before his eyes Monday after he smashed a $1.5 millionFerrari Enzo into a concrete wall during a charity event at Irwindale Speedway, leaving the ultra-expensive sports car asmoking pile of twisted metal.
The high-speed collision, captured on tape by KCBS in Los Angeles took place during rehearsals for a charity event called"Race for a Cause." Griffin, who starred in "Undercover Brother" and "Norbit," left the crash scene in an ambulance,although he did not suffer any serious injuries and seemed to be in good spirits.
The luxury automobiles used in the charity event were part of a promotion for the film "Redline," a movie about the high-endworld of high-performance sports cars.

Playboy model Anna Nicole Smith died of an accidental drug overdose after she was found unresponsive at a hotel,authorities said Monday.
"We found nothing to indicate any foul play," said Chief Charlie Tiger of the Seminole police department.
Neither Tiger nor Broward County Medical Examiner Joshua Perper immediately said what drug or drugs were involved in herdeath. Perper said the detailed autopsy showed no evidence of disease.
Smith, 39, had been found unresponsive Feb. 8 in her room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood.
The weeks after her death that day were filled with public courtroom drama and private whispers about what might have killedher. Officials delayed releasing the autopsy results because of additional evidence, not publicly released.
Perper's initial examination had revealed no serious injuries to her body. Perper said then that prescription drugs, but noillegal drugs, were found in Smith's hotel room, though he wouldn't identify them.
Smith had arrived at the Hard Rock on Feb. 5 and planned to leave four days later aboard a new yacht that her companionHoward K. Stern was arranging to buy. She was seldom seen outside her room during her stay: She was said tobe suffering from a stomach flu before she died.
Because her death was so sudden, and because her 20-year-old son Daniel died under suspicious circumstances fivemonths earlier, there has been speculation about possible criminal activity surrounding the deaths. The Seminole Police Departmentinvestigated the case because the casino is on tribal land.
An inquest into Daniel's death is scheduled to start Tuesday in the Bahamas, where he died.
Smith grew up in Texas and went from topless dancer to Playboy Playmate of the Year, Guess jeans model and bride of 89-year-old oilman J. Howard Marshall II. She took her fight for Marshall's estimated $500 million fortune as far as the SupremeCourt, and the ongoing battle could make her infant daughter, Dannielynn, very wealthy. Stern and two other menhave claimed to be the baby's father.

Dr. Perper says Anna's temperature went down after the first tough night at the Hard Rock, but she exhibited vomiting and asthe week wore on her condition deteriorated. On the last day of her life, Thursday, February 8, Dr. Perper says Howard K.Stern woke up at 10:00 AM and found Anna awake. Stern helped her to the bathroom and then she went back to bed andwent to sleep.
Dr. Perper says Stern left the room and didn't return until after 911 was called.
