Archaeologists on a Greek island have discovered a large Roman-era tomb containing gold jewelry, pottery and bronzeofferings, officials said Wednesday. The building, near the village of Fiscardo on Kefalonia, contained five burialsincluding a large vaulted grave and a stone coffin, a Culture Ministry announcement said.
The complex, measuring 26 by 20 feet, had been missed by grave-robbers, the announcement said.
Archaeologists found gold earrings and rings, gold leaves that may have been attached to ceremonial clothing, as well asglass and clay pots, bronze artifacts decorated with masks, a bronze lock and copper coins.
The vaulted grave, a house-shaped structure, had a small stone door that still works perfectly - turning on stone pivots.
On a nearby plot, archaeologists also located traces of what may have been a small theater with four rows of stone seats, theministry said.
Previous excavations in the area have uncovered remains of houses, a baths complex and a cemetery, all dating to Romantimes - between 146 B.C. and 330 A.D.

TMZ has just confirmed the California Medical Board is conducting a formal investigation into Dr. Khristine Eroshevich, Anna'spsychiatrist who prescribed numerous drugs that Anna ended up taking.
Eleven drugs were found in the hotel room where Anna died, all prescribed by Eroshevich. Eight were prescribed to Howard K.Stern, including chloral hydrate, the drug that was the most direct cause of Anna's death.
This is the second Anna doc who is being investigated for prescribing practices involving Anna Nicole Smith. The Board isalso investigating Dr. Sandeep Kapoor, who prescribed methadone to Smith under an alias when she was eight months pregnant.
Last September, just five days after Daniel died, a document shows that Dr. Eroshevich sent Dr. Kapoor a prescription wishlist for Anna, which included methadone, Soma, Dilaudid and Lorazepam. Kapoor has said he did not fill theprescriptions.

Asia's richest woman, Nina Wang, has died of an unspecified illness after reports she had been battling cancer, leavingunanswered questions over her estimated $4.2 billion (2.1 billion pound) fortune.
Known for her signature pigtails and nicknamed "little sweetie" by the local media, Wang, 69, won a court case in 2005 forher late husband's business empire in a case filled with tales of adultery, kidnapping and murder.
The Hong Kong heiress, whose maiden name was Kung, was reported by local newspapers to be suffering from cancer, butthat was never officially confirmed.
"Chinachem Group's chairwoman Nina Wang Kung passed away on April 3 and the details of the funeral will be announcedlater," her personal assistant, Ringo Wong, told Reuters by telephone.
Wang's company, Hong Kong's largest private property developer, Chinachem Group, confirmed in a statement that she diedon Tuesday.
Wang, ranked by Forbes Magazine as Asia's 35th richest person, had no children but is survived by at least one brother andreportedly other siblings.
Lawyer Wong Tak-sing said under Hong Kong law Nina Wang's brothers and sisters could apply to inherit her fortune if shedid not have a will. Wang's nieces or nephews could share the wealth as well if their parents had died.
Wang successfully battled her father-in-law for a multi-billion dollar estate left by her late husband Teddy Wang, a propertytycoon who vanished more than a decade ago.
KIDNAPPED
Central to the marathon probate case was a handwritten will that Wang said was penned and signed by Teddy in March 1990,a month before he was kidnapped and never seen again. Some reports at the time said Teddy was gagged and boundand thrown out to sea from a Chinese "sampan" boat.
Teddy was also kidnapped in 1983 when his car was hijacked, and only released -- left in an iron box at the side of a road --after Nina paid an $11 million ransom.
Born in Shanghai, Wang went to Hong Kong in 1955 to rejoin Teddy, who ran a pharmaceuticals and vinyl business beforestarting to dabble in property. By the 1980s the couple were part of the booming city's glitterati.
Hong Kong newspapers reported late last year that Wang had ovarian cancer that had spread to her liver and other organs,and had been admitted to hospital for chemotherapy.
Two firms, in which Nina Wang held stakes, saw their stock prices fall on Wednesday. Fashion retailer ENM Holdingsdropped 14 percent, while China Solar Energy Holdings Ltd. lost 2.63 percent.
Wang was also a strategic investor in CITIC 1616, which jumped 67 percent on its market debut the day she died, and wasup 1.86 percent on Wednesday.

Asia's richest woman, Nina Wang, has died of an unspecified illness after reports she had been battling cancer, leavingunanswered questions over her estimated $4.2 billion (2.1 billion pound) fortune.
Known for her signature pigtails and nicknamed "little sweetie" by the local media, Wang, 69, won a court case in 2005 forher late husband's business empire in a case filled with tales of adultery, kidnapping and murder.
The Hong Kong heiress, whose maiden name was Kung, was reported by local newspapers to be suffering from cancer, butthat was never officially confirmed.
"Chinachem Group's chairwoman Nina Wang Kung passed away on April 3 and the details of the funeral will be announcedlater," her personal assistant, Ringo Wong, told Reuters by telephone.
Wang's company, Hong Kong's largest private property developer, Chinachem Group, confirmed in a statement that she diedon Tuesday.
Wang, ranked by Forbes Magazine as Asia's 35th richest person, had no children but is survived by at least one brother andreportedly other siblings.
Lawyer Wong Tak-sing said under Hong Kong law Nina Wang's brothers and sisters could apply to inherit her fortune if shedid not have a will. Wang's nieces or nephews could share the wealth as well if their parents had died.
Wang successfully battled her father-in-law for a multi-billion dollar estate left by her late husband Teddy Wang, a propertytycoon who vanished more than a decade ago.
KIDNAPPED
Central to the marathon probate case was a handwritten will that Wang said was penned and signed by Teddy in March 1990,a month before he was kidnapped and never seen again. Some reports at the time said Teddy was gagged and boundand thrown out to sea from a Chinese "sampan" boat.
Teddy was also kidnapped in 1983 when his car was hijacked, and only released -- left in an iron box at the side of a road --after Nina paid an $11 million ransom.
Born in Shanghai, Wang went to Hong Kong in 1955 to rejoin Teddy, who ran a pharmaceuticals and vinyl business beforestarting to dabble in property. By the 1980s the couple were part of the booming city's glitterati.
Hong Kong newspapers reported late last year that Wang had ovarian cancer that had spread to her liver and other organs,and had been admitted to hospital for chemotherapy.
Two firms, in which Nina Wang held stakes, saw their stock prices fall on Wednesday. Fashion retailer ENM Holdingsdropped 14 percent, while China Solar Energy Holdings Ltd. lost 2.63 percent.
Wang was also a strategic investor in CITIC 1616, which jumped 67 percent on its market debut the day she died, and wasup 1.86 percent on Wednesday.

A Mars-orbiting satellite recently spotted seven dark spots near the planet's equator that scientists think could be entrancesto underground caves.
The football-field sized holes were observed by Mars Odyssey's Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS) and have beendubbed the seven sisters --Dena, Chloe, Wendy, Annie, Abbey, Nikki and Jeanne--after loved ones of the researcherswho found them. The potential caves were spotted near a massive Martian volcano, Arisa Mons. Their openingsrange from about 330 to 820 feet (100 to 250 meters) wide, and one of them, Dena, is thought to extend nearly 430feet (130 meters) beneath the planet's surface.
The researchers hope the discovery will lead to more focused spelunking on Mars.
"Caves on Mars could become habitats for future explorers or could be the only structures that preserve evidence of past orpresent microbial life ," said Glenn Cushing of Northern Arizona University, who first spotted the black areas in thephotographs.
A project here on Earth aims to refine the visual and infrared techniques THEMIS used to find the Martian caves and to alsodevelop robots that can one day enter the caverns and explore them.
Practicing on Earth
Called the Earth-Mars Cave Detection Program, the project is preparing to enter phase 2, during which scientists will testtheir approach in "Mars analogue" sites, terrestrial environments with similarities to Martian landscapes. These sites will includedry, blistering deserts, such as the Mojave in California and the Atacama in Chile, as well as frigid environments likeIceland and Antarctica.
During the first phase of the project, the researchers acquired the thermal signatures of a dozen caves in Arizona and NewMexico using an experimental infrared detector flown aboard an airplane, called the Quantum Well Infrared Photodetector(QWIP), as well as data collected on the ground using a handheld thermal camera.
Cave detection using QWIP works by spotting regions in the landscape where temperatures are different from thesurroundings. Inside a cave, temperatures are nearly constant due to lack of sunlight. Outside, temperatures fluctuate withthe rising and setting of the Sun. At a cave entrance, these two temperature regimes mix together to create a uniquethermal signature that, depending on the time of day, can be either warmer or cooler than the surrounding environment.
"The caves show up as hotspots in a sea of cold, or as cold spots in a sea of warmth," said study team member MurzyJhabvala, chief engineer of the Instrument Systems and Technology Center at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
The data, still being analyzed, look promising. In one series of images, the researchers snapped thermal images of XenolithCave in New Mexico over a 24-hour period. The cave opening can be seen clearly in some of the images.
"It jumps out at you," said Jut Wynne, a biospeleologist (cave biologist) with the U.S. Geological Survey and Northern ArizonaUniversity. "It lights up like a Christmas tree in the predawn and in the late-night shots. It's a bit more ephemeralduring the day shots."
In Phase 2, the researchers will tweak their technique to figure out the best wavelengths to use and optimal times during theday for cave hunting. "In so doing, we're going to take these applications and then apply them to an orbiter platform forMars," said Wynne, who is also the Earth-Mars Cave Detection Program project leader.
Robotic cave explorers
The project team also aims to design robots that can explore caves on Mars after they have been spotted. Natalie Cabrol, aplanetary geologist with NASA Ames and the SETI Institute, will be integral to this part of the project.
Cabrol is a Mars robot veteran. Before Spirit and Opportunity were sent to Mars, she helped engineers perfect their designsby field-testing the robotic rovers in the Atacama Desert in Chile.
The researchers may have to design more than one type of robotic cave explorer. "There are many types of caves," Cabrolsaid in a telephone interview. "It may be that we come up with one very versatile design ... or we might end up withseveral designs."
If the caves have a relatively simple structure--like lava tubes, which are caves carved by flowing magma and are relativelysimple and straight--a rover-type robot might work, Cabrol said. "I would doubt that a rover, equipped as they arenow, would do a good job in a cave" with a more complicated geometry, she said.
Open to ideas
The researchers are also considering other robotic design possibilities, including the deployment of several miniature robotstogether into a cave.
"You could throw out an array of microbots in a birdshot approach over an area where you think there is a cave," Wynne toldSPACE.com . The microbots could then use sonar or some other method to confirm the presence of a cave and pinpointits location.
Whatever form the team's robotic explorer ultimately takes, it will have to be agile, have some basic sense of self-awareness,sport excellent night vision and have the ability to communicate with one other in some innovative way, sinceconventional radio communication might not work well in caves, Cabrol said.
"We are very much on the starting line on this," she added. "This is very exciting. This is really the time when ideas areflitting all over the place."

TMZ spies tell us La Lopez arrived at the Beverly Hills Courthouse at 8:30 AM with an assistant in tow, and spent most of hertime in the jury room text messaging friends. Although we're told Jennifer was really down to earth and talked to otherjurors, at one point the prospective jurors were ushered into a hallway, while the pop diva stayed inside the courtroomwith a personally assigned deputy.
Sources say the jury room was quite chilly, and after lunch Lopez returned dressed with a sweater and scarf and with adifferent assistant than in the morning.
At 2:30 PM word came down that the court case had been resolved and all forty prospective jurors, including Jennifer, werefree to go home. Case closed!

TMZ spies tell us La Lopez arrived at the Beverly Hills Courthouse at 8:30 AM with an assistant in tow, and spent most of hertime in the jury room text messaging friends. Although we're told Jennifer was really down to earth and talked to otherjurors, at one point the prospective jurors were ushered into a hallway, while the pop diva stayed inside the courtroomwith a personally assigned deputy.
Sources say the jury room was quite chilly, and after lunch Lopez returned dressed with a sweater and scarf and with adifferent assistant than in the morning.
At 2:30 PM word came down that the court case had been resolved and all forty prospective jurors, including Jennifer, werefree to go home. Case closed!

Stars-on-ice Will Ferrell and Jon Heder took the box office gold for the weekend. Paramount and DreamWorks' "Blades ofGlory," with Ferrell and Heder playing figure-skating rivals who become the sport's first men's pair, debuted as the No. 1movie with $33 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.
Disney's animated adventure "Meet the Robinsons," about the time-traveling journey of a brilliant but lonely orphan, debuted insecond place with $25.1 million.
The previous weekend's top movie the Warner Bros. animated tale "TMNT," a revival of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle"franchise slipped to fourth place with $9.2 million, down a steep 62 percent from its $24.3 million debut. "TMNT" raisedits 10-day total to $38.4 million.
After a monthlong surge, the overall box office declined. The top 12 movies took in $115 million, down 13 percent from thesame weekend last year, when "Ice Age: The Meltdown" opened with $68 million.
"This is still a good weekend, a pretty healthy one-two punch with `Blades of Glory' and `Meet the Robinsons' at the top," saidPaul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers.
Movie attendance is up 4 percent so far this year, Dergarabedian said.
Teaming with "Napoleon Dynamite" star Heder on "Blades of Glory," Ferrell scored the second-best opening of his career,behind last summer's "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," which took in $47 million in its first weekend.
"It starts with a great concept, and the whole picture was cast so well," said DreamWorks spokesman Marvin Levy. "Anotherpart of the surprise was, we got a ton of very, very good reviews."
"Meet the Robinsons" played in about 3,400 theaters and did especially well in a 3-D version at 600 cinemas, said ChuckViane, head of distribution for Disney. The studio did not have a precise breakdown, but cinemas reported that screensplaying the 3-D version pulled in about double the grosses of theaters running the regular 2-D version, Viane said.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Finalfigures will be released Monday.

TMZ has learned Larry Birkhead got a Fed Ex on Saturday, and it was not good news. It was a bill for legal services fromDebri Opri, the lawyer he fired two weeks ago. The total: $620,492.84.
Opri billed her services out at $475 an hour. Here are some of the charges
- A total of three $1,500 monthly charges for Luck Media & Marketing, Opri's personal publicist.
- On March 1, 2007, the day before Anna's funeral, there is a charge of 10 hours for "preparation for and attendance inBahamas re services and var. meetings re same." On the day of Anna's funeral, there is another 10 hour charge with theexact same language. Ironically, TMZ knows Birkhead asked Opri not to even attend the funeral, but she did anyway. OnMarch 3, Opri charged yet another 10 hours for travel from Nassau back to L.A.
- On February 24, 2007, while Opri and Birkhead stayed at a private residence in Ft. Lauderdale during the Florida hearing,Opri billed $600 for Seafood World. We're told she brought four trays of lobster to the house. The bill says, "Dinnergift/Ft. Lauderdale house stay." But it was no gift to Larry. That same day, she billed $211 for items at Publix grocerystore.
- March 8, 2007, Opri billed $161.65 for an Outback Steakhouse dinner. And get this -- the bill was for $111.65. Opri left a $50tip and billed Birkhead, who wasn't even there!
- Opri billed Birkhead $4,265 for Cingular roaming service while she was in the Bahamas.
- Opri billed Birkhead 18 times for Diva Limos that took them to and from the Ft. Lauderdale courthouse to the privateresidence.
- October 22, 2006, Opri billed Birkhead $1,116.16 for a dinner at Graycliff, a restaurant in Nassau. The note next to thecharge is "Alexiou atty mtg." Alexiou is Birkhead's lawyer in the Bahamas. Birkhead was not present.
- The next day, October 23, Opri billed $2,467.75 at Graycliff restaurant for another meal. The charge again was for "Alexiouatty mtg." Again, Birkhead was not present.
- Also on October 23, Birkhead was billed $25.75. The item -- "laundry service Zawacki." Zawacki is Opri's husband, who waspresent on the trip. Ouch!
- Opri's bill reveals that "20/20" is more than a TV show -- it's the number of hours she bills for a "20/20" interview with LarryBirkhead. Opri and Birkhead went from L.A. to New York City on December 9, 2006, did the interview and returned thenext day. Opri billed 10 hours travel time each way.
In all, the packet of bills Birkhead received today totaled 112 pages. Opri offered Birkhead a bargain: Instead of the$620,492.84 bill, she offered him a discount at $511,365.09, but only if he accepts immediately. Opri wrote, "I'm still willing toaccept the discounted billing at this time, but only without further discussion."
TMZ contacted James Levesque, Opri's publicist with Luck Media & Marketing. He said, "Debra Opri always gets paid. That'swhat she does for a living." Beyond that, he wouldn't comment on the bill. Opri could not be immediately reached forcomment.
