Having spelled "serrefine" to win the Scripps National Spelling Bee, Evan O'Dorney is ready to tackle an even more unusualchallenge for a 13-year-old boy.
"In the fall," said his mother, Jennifer, "he'll be taking calculus."
Evan, a home-schooled eighth-grader from Danville, Calif., breezed through the competition Thursday night to become thenation's top speller. He said he knew the winning word - a noun describing small forceps - the moment the pronouncer saidit, but he was more enthusiastic when he spoke about an upcoming math camp this summer and the calculus class he'llbe taking at the University of California at Berkeley.
"My favorite things to do were math and music, and with the math I really like the way the numbers fit together," he said."And with the music I like to let out ideas by composing notes - and the spelling is just a bunch of memorization."
Evan won a tense duel with Nate Gartke of Spruce Grove, Alberta, who was attempting to become the first Canadian to winthe 80th annual bee. Evan and Nate went head-to-head for three rounds, matching each other's correct spellings until Nateflubbed the medical word "coryza" by adding the letter "h."
Until then, Nate had been quite the showman, waving celebrity-like to the audience after each word and basking in the cheersfrom a row that waved red-and-white maple leaf flags.
"I didn't know I could make it this far," said Nate, who planned to cap his week in Washington with a tour of Mount Vernon onFriday.
Evan, who tied for 14th last year, won $35,000 cash, plus a $5,000 scholarship, a $2,500 savings bond and a set of referenceworks. His victory came even though he wasn't able to stick to one of his superstitions: He didn't have his usual pre-competition meal of fish because chicken was served instead at the Spelling Bee dinner.
Asked if he liked the bee more now that he's won it, Evan said: "Are you saying I'm supposed to like it more? Yeah, I do alittle bit."
Evan's father, Michael, is a subway train operator in the San Francisco area. His mother, Jennifer, is in charge of Evan'sschooling. Jennifer said Evan's spelling prowess has given him some balance in a life that's been dominated by the loveof numbers.
"I believe it's made him more well-rounded," she said.
Evan was virtually unflappable on stage. The kid who juggles balls around the room at home while his mother calls out wordsappeared to be in trouble only once during the finals, when he had to restart "schuhplattler" a German-based worddescribing a dance. At one point, Evan calmly cleaned his glasses while Nate spelled a word.
The day began with 59 spellers remaining from the record 286 who started the competition Wednesday. The field wasnarrowed to 15 finalists, but eight were gone after the initial round and two more faltered in the next round, leaving afivesome of Evan, Nate, 14-year-old Joseph Henares, of Avon, Conn., 13-year-old Prateek Kohli of Westbury, N.Y., and 14-year-old Isabel Jacobson of Madison, Wis.
Joseph faltered on "aniseikonia" (a visual defect), while Prateek missed "oberek" (a Polish folk dance) and Isabel was out on"cyanophycean" (a kind of algae).
The big surprise was that perennial favorite Samir Patel wasn't around for the finals. The 13-year-old Texan, in his fifth andfinal bee because he can't participate once he's past the eighth grade, had the audience gasping in disbelief when he misspelled"clevis."
After placing third, 27th, second and 14th in his previous bees, Samir ended his bee career with a tie for 34th. He wiped awaytears as he talked about his gaffe.
"The first thing I thought was c-l-e-v-i-s, and if I had been slow and cautious like I always am, I would have got it right," hesaid. "But I just outsmarted myself. It was an easy word. I just made a stupid mistake."
Samir's mother, Jyoti, appealed his dismissal, based on subtle differences in the way the word's final syllable could bepronounced. The appeal was denied.
"In the end, I think I said it right," pronouncer Jacques Bailly said. "I really wanted him to get it right, and I'm really sorry thathe or his family have some questions about it."

While Paris Hilton heads off to jail this week, her "Simple Life" cohort Nicole Richie is still cruising the streets with a validdrivers license -- even though she has the same DUI charge under her belt and a record as a repeat offender! But here'sthe kicker -- no one seems to know why!
Paris was busted September 7, 2006 -- and around 5 months later, she had already lost her driving privileges and was laterarrested for violating her probation for driving on the suspended license. Richie was busted for DUI on December 11,2006 -- and almost 6 months later, she is not only still driving ... but the California DMV hasn't even begun to take action againsther.
TMZ spoke with Deputy District Attorney Ed Greene, a prosecutor assigned to Nicole's DUI case, who admitted, "I am a littlesurprised too." However, Greene pointed out that until Richie is actually convicted of DUI, the decision to revoke orsuspend her license is up to the folks at the California DMV. Greene added, "They generally do it quicker than this."
We contacted the California DMV to try and get some answers, and the rep said: "I have no idea why Nicole still has herlicense."

A 27-year-old man described as one of the world's most prolific spammers was arrested Wednesday, and federal authoritiessaid computer users across the Web could notice a decrease in the amount of junk e-mail.
Robert Alan Soloway is accused of using networks of compromised "zombie" computers to send out millions upon millions ofspam e-mails.
"He's one of the top 10 spammers in the world," said Tim Cranton, a Microsoft Corp. lawyer who is senior director of thecompany's Worldwide Internet Safety Programs. "He's a huge problem for our customers. This is a very good day."
A federal grand jury last week returned a 35-count indictment against Soloway charging him with mail fraud, wire fraud, e-mailfraud, aggravated identity theft and money laundering.
Soloway pleaded not guilty Wednesday afternoon to all charges after a judge determined that - even with four bank accountsseized by the government - he was sufficiently well off to pay for his own lawyer.
He has been living in a ritzy apartment and drives an expensive Mercedes convertible, said prosecutor Kathryn Warma.Prosecutors are seeking to have him forfeit $773,000 they say he made from his business, Newport InternetMarketing Corp.
A public defender who represented him for Wednesday's hearing declined to comment.
Prosecutors say Soloway used computers infected with malicious code to send out millions of junk e-mails since 2003. Thecomputers are called "zombies" because owners typically have no idea their machines have been infected.
He continued his activities even after Microsoft won a $7 million civil judgment against him in 2005 and the operator of a smallInternet service provider in Oklahoma won a $10 million judgment, prosecutors said.
U.S. Attorney Jeff Sullivan said Wednesday that the case is the first in the country in which federal prosecutors have usedidentity theft statutes to prosecute a spammer for taking over someone else's Internet domain name. Soloway could facedecades in prison, though prosecutors said they have not calculated what guideline sentencing range he might face.
The investigation began when the authorities began receiving hundreds of complaints about Soloway, who had been featuredon a list of known spammers kept by The Spamhaus Project, an international anti-spam organization.
The Santa Barbara County, Calif., Department of Social Services said it was spending $1,000 a week to fight the spam it wasreceiving, and other businesses and individuals complained of having their reputations damaged when it appeared spamwas originating from their computers.
"This is not just a nuisance. This is way beyond a nuisance," Warma said.
Soloway used the networks of compromised computers to send out unsolicited bulk e-mails urging people to use his Internetmarketing company to advertise their products, authorities said.
People who clicked on a link in the e-mail were directed to his Web site. There, Soloway advertised his ability to send out asmany as 20 million e-mail advertisements over 15 days for $495, the indictment said.
The Spamhaus Project rejoiced at his arrest.
"Soloway has been a long-term nuisance on the Internet - both in terms of the spam he sent, and the people he duped to usehis spam service," organizers wrote on Spamhaus.org.
Soloway remained in federal detention pending a hearing Monday.

A glittering bathtub made of gold worth nearly $1 million has been stolen from a resort hotel, an official said Wednesday.
A worker at Kominato Hotel Mikazuki in Kamogawa, south of Tokyo, notified police that the fancy tub was missing from thehotel's guest bathroom on the 10th floor, according to a local police official who only gave his surname, Ogawa.
The round tub, worth $987,000, is made of 18-karat gold and weighs 176 pounds.
The tub, flanked by two crane statues, has been a main feature of the hotel's shared bathroom. Visitors can take a dip in thetub, but it is only available a few hours a day "for security reasons," the hotel's Web site said.
Someone apparently cut the chain attached to the door of a small section of the bathroom where the bathtub was placed, butnot riveted, and made off with the tub, Ogawa said.
"We have no witness information and there are no video cameras," he said. "We have no idea who took it," the official said.

While the wrong-way driver treated herself to a manicure inside a Beverly Hills nail salon yesterday, police quicklysurrounded her car and gave her a ticket for parking her BMW in a Passenger Loading Zone. That was only the start of her problemsthough -- after getting her nails did, Nicole emerged from the salon and couldn't locate her keys!
After backtracking her steps all over town, an irritated Nicole eventually found a backup set, started her car ... and used herwindshield wipers in a failed attempt to get rid of that pesky parking ticket.

HONOLULU-Astronomers have discovered 28 new planets outside of our solar system, increasing to 236 the number ofknown exo planets, revealing that planets can exist around a broad spectrum of stellar types-from tiny, dim stars to giants.
"We added 12 percent to the total in the last year, and we're very proud of that," said one of the study team members JasonWright of the University of California at Berkeley. "This provides new planetary systems so that we can study theirproperties as an ensemble."
The planets are among 37 new objects spotted within the past year. Seven of the objects are failed stars called brown dwarfs,with masses that dwarf the largest, Jupiter-sized planets but too small to sustain the nuclear reactions necessary forstellar ignition.
John Johnson of the University of California at Berkeley and his colleagues presented the findings here today at a meeting ofthe American Astronomical Society (AAS).
Astronomers don't directly spot extrasolar planets, but rather look for stellar wobbles caused by orbiting planets. The planet'ssize and distance from the parent star affect how strong or weak of a wobble, and more sophisticated techniques formeasuring the stellar wobbles has led to an ever-lengthening list of such outer planets. Now they can detect wobbles of ameter per second compared with the 10-meter limit just 15 years ago.
Planet profiles
One of the exoplanets, a red M dwarf just 30 light-years from Earth, was discovered two years ago, but recent observationshave allowed astronomers to pin down its mass, radius and density. The ice-giant planet circles the star Gliese436 (GJ 436) and has a radius and density that are surprisingly similar to that of Neptune.
Weighing in at 22.4 Earth-masses, the exoplanet is the first Neptune-sized planet observed to transit a star. The previousrecord holder, dubbed HD 140926b, weighed in at 100 Earth masses, and Jupiter is 320 Earth masses.
"[Gliese 436b] must be 50 percent rock and about 50 percent water, with perhaps small amounts of hydrogen and helium,"said head of the planet-search team Geoffrey Marcy, also of UC Berkeley. "So this planet has the interior structure ofa hybrid super-Earth/Neptune, with a rocky core surrounded by a significant amount of water compressed into solid form athigh pressures and temperatures."
Its 2.6-day orbit around GJ 436 means the hybrid planet circles very close to its star, just 3 percent of the Sun-Earthdistance, and making it a hot Neptune. Unlike most giant planets found with such close ties to their stars, this planet has an eccentricorbit. The elongated orbit suggests the parent star could have another planetary companion with a more distant orbit.
"I'm sure people will immediately follow up and try to measure the atmospheric composition of this planet," Wright said.
GJ 436 is an M star and 70 percent of all stars are considered M-type stars, so finding that these dim stars can supportplanets could mean a boon for planet hunters.
Bigger is better
At least four of the newly spotted planets belong to multiple-planet systems, supporting the idea that at least 30 percent of allplanet-parent stars have more than one planetary companion. Since smaller planets and those outside our solar systemare trickier to detect, Wright predicts this percentage will continue to rise as detection methods improve.
And three of the just-discovered planets circle stars that boast masses between 1.6 and 1.9 times that of our Sun. The starsare A- and F-type stars, which are typically difficult to detect because they rotate fast and have pulsating atmospheres.
Due to their extreme rotational velocities and high temperatures, A and F stars only jitter slightly from orbiting planets and sosurveys can only pick up wobbles from super-massive planets and brown dwarfs in short-period orbits around these stars.
Johnson discovered that "retired" A stars, which have nearly burned all of their hydrogen and remain stable for a short stint,have slower rotation rates and are not so hot. That makes it easier for astronomers to measure their planet-causedwobbles.
Unlike planets orbiting M-type stars, these exo planets tend to orbit at least 0.8 astronomical units (AU) from the parentstars.
For this reason, massive stars are more likely to harbor Jupiter-sized planets than are lower-mass stars, Johnson said. Andretired A-type stars are twice as likely to support planets compared with Sun-like stars, which Johnson attributes to thefact that bigger stars start out with more material in their disks to feed planet building.
So these massive stars also could represent a treasure trove for places to spot new exoplanets, along with the M stars,Johnson said.
