Deep-sea explorers said Friday they have mined what could be the richest shipwreck treasure in history, bringing home 17tons of colonial-era silver and gold coins from an undisclosed site in the Atlantic Ocean. Estimated value: $500 million.

A jet chartered by Tampa-based Odyssey Marine Exploration landed in the United States recently with hundreds of plasticcontainers brimming with coins raised from the ocean floor, Odyssey co-chairman Greg Stemm said. The more than500,000 pieces are expected to fetch an average of $1,000 each from collectors and investors.

"For this colonial era, I think (the find) is unprecedented," said rare coin expert Nick Bruyer, who examined a batch of coinsfrom the wreck. "I don't know of anything equal or comparable to it."
Citing security concerns, the company declined to release any details about the ship or the wreck site Friday. Stemm said aformal announcement will come later, but court records indicate the coins might come from a 400-year-old ship found offEngland.

Because the shipwreck was found in a lane where many colonial-era vessels went down, there is still some uncertainty aboutits nationality, size and age, Stemm said, although evidence points to a specific known shipwreck. The site is beyondthe territorial waters or legal jurisdiction of any country, he said.

"Rather than a shout of glee, it's more being able to exhale for the first time in a long time," Stemm said of the haul, by far thebiggest in Odyssey's 13-year history.

He wouldn't say if the loot was taken from the same wreck site near the English Channel that Odyssey recently petitioned afederal court for permission to salvage.

In seeking exclusive rights to that site, an Odyssey attorney told a federal judge last fall that the company likely had foundthe remains of a 17th-century merchant vessel that sank with valuable cargo aboard, about 40 miles off the southwestern tip ofEngland. A judge signed an order granting those rights last month.

In keeping with the secretive nature of the project dubbed "Black Swan," Odyssey also isn't talking yet about the types, denominations and country of origin of the coins.
Bruyer said he observed a wide range of varieties and dates of likely uncirculated currency in much better condition thanartifacts yielded by most shipwrecks of a similar age.

The Black Swan coins - mostly silver pieces - likely will fetch several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars each, withsome possibly commanding much more, he said. Value is determined by rarity, condition and the story behind them.

Controlled release of the coins into the market along with their expected high value to collectors likely will keep prices at apremium, he said.

The richest ever shipwreck haul was yielded by the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which sank in a hurricane offthe Florida Keys in 1622. Treasure-hunting pioneer Mel Fisher found it in 1985, retrieving a reported $400 million in coinsand other loot.
Odyssey likely will return to the same spot for more coins and artifacts.
"We have treated this site with kid gloves and the archaeological work done by our team out there is unsurpassed," OdysseyCEO John Morris said. "We are thoroughly documenting and recording the site, which we believe will have immensehistorical significance."

The news is timely for Odyssey, the only publicly traded company of its kind.
The company salvaged more than 50,000 coins and other artifacts from the wreck of the SS Republic off Savannah, Ga., in2003, making millions. But Odyssey posted losses in 2005 and 2006 while using its expensive, state-of-the-art ships anddeep-water robotic equipment to hunt for the next mother lode.

"The outside world now understands that what we do is a real business and is repeatable and not just a lucky one shot deal,"Stemm said. "I don't know of anybody else who has hit more than one economically significant shipwreck."

In January, Odyssey won permission from the Spanish government to resume a suspended search for the wreck of the HMSSussex, which was leading a British fleet into the Mediterranean Sea for a war against France in 1694 when it sank in astorm off Gibraltar.

Historians believe the 157-foot warship was carrying nine tons of gold coins to buy the loyalty of the Duke of Savoy, apotential ally in southeastern France. Odyssey believes those coins could also fetch more than $500 million.

But under the terms of a historic agreement Odyssey will have to share any finds with the British government. The companywill get 80 percent of the first $45 million and about 50 percent of the proceeds thereafter.

A chance finding in wounded lab mice could point the way to reversing hair loss, scientists say.
While studying the healing of wounds in mice, a team at the University of Pennsylvania noticed that the animals developednew hair follicles after their skin was scraped.
This is very unusual, because "the dogma was that when you're born, you're stuck with the number of hair follicles that youhave," said study co-author Dr. George Cotsarelis, director of the university's Hair and Scalp Clinic. And, if the follicles die-- as occurs during aging -- they can't be revived.

No one knows if new follicle growth occurs in wounded humans or if researchers can find a way to harness the hair-growingeffect without having to actually hurt people.
But scientists are hopeful, especially considering that current treatments for baldness do not create new follicles to replaceones that have died.

"We're amazed that we're getting follicles to form," Cotsarelis said. He believes the findings could even "lead to a betterunderstanding of regeneration that might be important for treating wounds and larger sorts of injuries down the road."

Apparently, something in the mice's healing process reprograms stem cells in the skin to start making new follicles,Cotsarelis said. Essentially, he said, the process is like rebooting a computer and sending out a new commandthrough a gene. "You're getting the clock to go back to where it was at birth," he explained.

The result is new follicles that seem to act just like follicles should -- they sprout hair.
The study is published in the May 17 issue of the journal Nature.
The wounds that appear to cause the hair regrowth in the mice are similar to a common dermatological treatment known asdermabrasion, Cotsarelis said. In dermabrasion, layers of skin are scraped off and healing begins.

So, why not start treating balding people with dermabrasion on their heads? Cotsarelis -- who is forming a company toexplore ways to develop the treatment for human use -- cautioned that it's not quite that easy. Scientists may have to expand uponthe treatment and work with genes to make hair grow properly, he said.

Besides hair growth, the research could have other benefits. "The follicle is a small organ, a mini-organ," Cotsarelis said. "Ifyou can figure out how to regenerate the follicle, you also have a better idea about how to regenerate a finger or a limb."
Dr. Andrzej A. Dlugosz, a professor of dermatology at the University of Michigan who's familiar with the study, said theresearch is "very elegant" and especially unique since it involves mice that have not been genetically altered.

As to the scientific study of hair loss, he said that hair growth problems are hardly trivial. "There are many types of hair loss, and some of these can be emotionally devastating. Developing effective ways to restore hair can do a lot of good forpatients in terms of their general well-being," Dlugosz said.

Indeed, he said, the research might also help produce skin grafts that look and function more like normal skin in burn victims.
Viewpoint - This is pretty cool!

Hey, it's Daniel from TMZ here, back with another edition of the "Lost" Diary. Tonight's episode is a Charlie flashback one, soobviously I am anticipating his (hopefully painful) demise. If you haven't been with me since the beginning, I hate Charlie. Ithink his character is useless on the show and it doesn't help things that the actor who plays him is dating Evangeline Lilly, who plays Kate. You can't be the worst character on one of my favorite shows AND date someone that hot. Just ain'tright. So I apologize in advance if I spend half this episode begging for Charlie to die. For all you "Lost" Diary newbie's,here's how it goes. I gather with a group of friends watching "Lost," writing what happens on the show as it happens, and throwing in my two cents along the way. This week the crew is Ari, Lauren, Marisa, April and Matt. April madecupcakes tonight and Charlie might die -- what more could I want?. Let's roll

10:00 -- "No matter what I do, you're gonna die, Charlie." -- Desmond, from a few weeks back. Please don't be a liar,Desmond. Please, please, please.

10:01 -- Someone goes running through the beach, grabs a boat, and makes off with it into the ocean. Couldn't really see whoit was, but it looked like Karl, Alex's boyfriend.

10:02 -- "I don't know, stuff? Probably secret stuff." -- Hurley. Sawyer's attempts at humor have worn thin on me, but Hurley'shave not.

10:03 -- When was the last time we saw so many characters together? Feels like the old band is back together.

10:04 -- Jack's speech was awesome. Seriously, I am ready to go and fight the Others right now(except for Henry Gale, ofcourse). It was like he channeled his inner "Braveheart." The entire room just broke out in applause. Anyone whocomplained that Jack has turned into a (female cat) can rest rest easy now. Just one question: Why exactly did he blow up the tree?

10:07 -- Before this flashback starts, I am making a pledge: I will only say nice things about Charlie until he dies. This pledgeonly lasts for this episode. What are the odds I can keep it?

10:08 -- As soon as Lauren realized it was a Charlie flashback episode, she yelled out, "It's your night, Dan!" Don't jinxitLauren.10:09 -- Um, Charlie has nice handwriting.

10:10 -- "Look on the bright side you're not really dead, right?" -- Naomi. Right?

10:11 -- The Others have a station, the Looking Glass, that jams all signals off the island, including Danielle's distress signalthat has been playing for 16 years. Maybe if she explored the island a bit, she could have learned some of this stuffsooner.

10:12 -- Let's see ... um, Charlie is ... nice to Aaron ... when he isn't kidnapping him and dragging him into the ocean. Wait, does that count?

10:13 -- So, apparently, Charlie has to die for there to be a rescue. Seems like a fair trade to me, right? But wait ... theyaren't getting rescued in the next two episodes (Hello? Three more seasons!) so there is no way the helicopter comes and Charliecan't die (at least not like that). Oh man, I am getting a bad feeling.

10:17-- Um, Charlie was a cute kid.

10:18 -- So let's review now: the episode is called "Greatest Hits" and it's starting to feel like Charlie's flashback scenes arethe most memorable moments of his life -- one might call them the greatest hits. Is this an homage to Charlie? A swansong? I am starting to get excited again.

10:19 -- It seems Charlie drowns to death. Slow and painful, I like that.

10:20 -- Charlie volunteers to swim to the hatch and flip the switch. He's admirable, I'll give him that.

10:21 -- Oh dear lord, I have never been so happy to see a middle-aged interracial couple in my whole life. I speak for everysingle "Lost" fan when I say this: We missed you, Rose and Bernard.

10:22 -- I am usually turned off to "Lost's" sappier moments, except when Sun and Jin are involved.

10:23 -- The boat from the beginning of the episode swims ashore, and lo and behold, it's Karl, who happens to take a nastyopen-sand tackle from Sayid.

10:24 -- "No, they're coming tonight ... They're coming right now!" -- Karl. Uh oh.

10:27 -- "Here's your gun back." Henry Gale to Alex. How much do I love this man?

10:28 -- Whoa, so Henry Gale is planning on taking any women they can find and killing any men who get in their way. You'remaking it hard for me to love you, Henry.

10:29 -- Alexis the one who warned Karl to warn the Losties. Why exactly do the Others let her hang around when they makeplans?

10:30 -- "Is he my father?" -- Alex. Wow, this is like that scene in "Empire Strikes Back" when Luke finds out Darth Vader isreally his dad - only the exact opposite.

10:31 -- "They know, Karl. But thanks." -- Juliet.

10:32 -- Two things about Jack's second "Braveheart" speech of the night. First of all, I'll say it again: welcome back, Jack.Glad you go your cajones back from Juliet's purse. Second, if Desmond is going to try and do something to help saveCharlie, I will black out with rage. Just saying.

10:33 -- Another Charlie greatest hit and I can see why. Oh, it's because of his brother and the ring. Eh, I guess that wasnice.

10:35 -- Odds Charlie gives Aaron the ring?

10:36 -- Guess not.

10:41 -- Charlie is good at fending off muggers with a guitar. Wasn't Charlie playing the same song in the same place as hewas in Desmond's weird flashback episode from earlier this year? Oh, and by the way, the girl that Charlie saved wasSayid's girlfriend, Nadia. Small world, huh?

10:42 -- If Charlie is making a list of the five greatest moments in his life, what reason does he have to write one down every15 minutes?

10:43 -- "Nothing is going to happen to me, Rose." -- Bernard. Uh oh.

10:44 -- "Then I am staying too." -- Rose. Double uh oh. This can't be good.

10:45 -- "I like you better since you got back, Jack." -- Rose. Man, I missed her. She said what we ALL were thinking.

10:46 -- Jack's "Braveheart" speeches were good. But Sayid matched him with the "you're our leader, so act like one"speech.

10:47 --Charlie's "goodbye" to Hurley was touching. Doesn't change anything between us though, Charlie. Your death is stillmy Christmas morning. Santa better come down that chimney in the next 13 minutes!

10:50 -- The suspense of the Others' raid is killing me!

10:51 -- Ah ha! I knew Charlie left Aaron that ring. Too easy.

10:52 -- Into the ocean go Charlie and Desmond ...

10:53 -- Charlie's number one memory is meeting Claire -- how sweet. Of course, it's so sweet that I am now 100% certainhe's going to die.

10:55 -- Desmond is trying to take Charlie's place. Do not take this moment from me. I don't ask for much, brutha! Let thelittle hobbit die!!!

10:56 -- Desmond, no, please stop. Come on Charlie, be a man!!!!

10:57 -- Yes!!! Charlie, I've never loved you more. But did you really need to hit him in the head with an oar?

10:58 -- Please, I can't take another week of this. Just let him die before this episode ends.

10:59 -- "I'm alive!" -- Charlie. Yeah, I see that.

11:00 -- Hmmm, chicks with guns. Desmond didn't see that coming, did he? That was like the "Mission: Impossible" versionof "Lost." It had the foot to the pedal from the opening scene to the very last moment. I have never been more exhaustedwatching an hour of television in my life. The anticipation involved with everything that was going on nearly gave mea heart attack. I need a shower and a nap. This episode was really just a bridge between last week's episode and nextweek's finale. But what a bridge it was! Jack was back to his old self and Rose and Bernardwere just back. That alone isenough to give this episode an A. Except for the fact that ...... CHARLIE DIDN'T DIE!!! I SAT THROUGH CHARLIEFLASHBACKS FOR NOTHING!!! So I have to give the episode a B. You can't NOT kill Charlie -- when you set himup to die so perfectly -- and expect to get an A from me. Not happening. As for Charlie not dying, well, I'll be alright. Don'tworry about me. I mean, it's just a TV show ... right?

Final thoughts: We shouldn't be surprised that the Looking Glass wasn't what we thought it would be. Juliet said that all sheknew about it was what Henry Gale told her and --surprise, surprise -- he lied. There is more going on in that station thanwe realize --another way off the island, maybe? Or perhaps it is the real way off the island.

Time for this week's question: Why does God hate me? Seriously, WTF?!?! Just kill Charlie already, please! OK, seriously. Here is my real question ... I have asked this one multiple times, but with only one episode left, it's fitting to ask itagain. The producers of "Lost" come up to you and say, "We'll solve one mystery for you in the finale, which one do youwant?" What do you choose?

As for other "Lost" Diary business, I thought the Q&A went well, and I'll definitely do another one. You can send yourquestions to questions@thelostdiary.com and the article will appear Monday at Noon ETon www.thelostdiary.com. Nowthat we've got one under our belts, you can see the kinds of questions I chose, so feel free to have fun with it. See younext week.

There's more worrisome news about vitamins: Taking too many may increase men's risk of dying from prostate cancer.

The study, being published Wednesday, doesn't settle the issue. But it is the biggest yet to suggest high-dose multivitaminsmay harm the prostate, and the latest chapter in the confusing quest to tell whether taking various vitaminsreally helps a variety of conditions - or is a waste of money, or worse.

Government scientists turned to a study tracking the diet and health of almost 300,000 men. About a third reported taking adaily multivitamin, and 5 percent were heavy users, swallowing the pills more than seven times a week.

Within five years of the study's start, 10,241 men had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Some 1,476 had advancedcancer; 179 died.

Heavy multivitamin users were almost twice as likely to get fatal prostate cancer as men who never took the pills, concludesthe study in Wednesday's Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Here's the twist: Overall, the researchers found no link between multivitamin use and early-stage prostate cancer.

The researchers speculate that perhaps high-dose vitamins had little effect until a tumor appeared, and then could spur itsgrowth.

While similar but smaller studies have suggested a link, too, more rigorous research is needed, caution the National CancerInstitute scientists. This newest study involves men who voluntarily took vitamins, and those most at risk - perhapsbecause they had a family history of the disease - may have been more likely to take the pills in hopes of avoidingtheir fate.

Still, "the findings lend further credence to the possibility of harm associated with increased use of supplements," Dr.Christian Gluud of Copenhagen University Hospital and Dr. Goran Bjelakovic of Serbia's University of Nis wrote in an accompanyingeditorial.

Viewpoint - I'm not sure what to make of this. Hopefully more research is done to come up with some solid evidence.

With a scaly, slithery creature in his grip, a hissssterical half-naked snake handler let loose in front of Paris Hilton yesterday -- and then demanded $20 million in return!

The jail-bound blonde mounted her bicycle and peddled along the Venice Beach boardwalk in a workout session with her "Ionly buy my T-shirts in the kids section" trainer -- when the wacky locals gave chase. Hilton quickly rode off, with thesnapparazzi following every step of the way. On returning to her car, the heiress found a full-blown circus, including asnake charmer who took center stage atop a dumpster, wriggling his snakes for Paris -- then asking her for $20 million! He's stillwaiting.

With Justin Timberlake's "What Goes Around" bumping from her ride (Paris seems to know that karma's a bitch), she thenhightailed it to a nearby arts and crafts store, where one passerby offered some words of wisdom about jail: "Just go inthere and be yourself!"

Fatigued from all the bizarre attention, Paris stopped for a Pinkberry -- and went home.

For people based in the US, who enjoy playing games such as Poker, Blackjack or Slots, or indeed any type of 'gambling'activity then the last few months would have been disappointing and confusing. Since the Unlawful InternetGambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was brought into law it has left US players unsure of the legality of online gambling activities.
Luckily two blogs have been launched recently to help US based players trawl through the various issues relating to the ban,and to find out how they can still legally gamble online, in the US.

The two blogs are at (POKER) and .(CASINOS).

The two blogs explain how it is still legal to play, how to deposit money on each site, and a full list of casinos and poker sitesstill accepting US players.
The reason that US players can still play, even though it was at first thought legal is because the UIGEA only prohibits USbased financial institutions from conducting transactions with gambling sites. It says NOTHING at all about people playingon the sites. Therefore if you can fund an account at a room that still accepts US players, then you can legally play atthat room.

Since the law was passed, it has become slightly harder to fund your account, but both blogs give clear and conciseinstructions on how you can do this, with only a minimum of effort, and if you follow the instructions, you should beplaying poker, or using casinos quickly.
There have been recent developments within Congress with Barney Frank trying to repeal the law. The owner of the blogs,Dave Chance, thinks that if more Americans were to continue openly playing it would only help this change.

He commented on the reason for setting up the blogs, "If there were still millions of US based players using poker sites, andcasinos, then it would send out a clear message to our lawmakers that we, as adults, want to continue spending ourmoney, that we earned, playing games that we enjoy. Each player that continues playing just shows Congress that we willnot stop fighting this law."

The websites also show details of other steps you can take in the fight to stop the ban. People who want more details of howplayers can continue playing poker or using casinos online should check out the following sites.

Daily Update 05/15/2007

Hello and welcome to my page

An experiment aimed at finding ways to help astronauts adapt to life on Mars could end up helping insomniacs on Earth, researchers said on Monday.
They found that two 45-minute exposures to bright light in the evening could help people adjust to a longer, Martian-style day.

During the experiment, they found a wider-than-expected variation in an internal system the human body uses to keep trackof days and nights, and they believe their treatment might help people with certain disorders of this system.

"The results have powerful implications for the treatment of circadian rhythm sleep disorders, including shift work disorder andadvanced sleep phase disorder," said Dr. Charles Czeisler, chief of the Division of Sleep Medicine at Brigham andWomen's Hospital and Harvard medical school in Boston.

The U.S. space agency NASA had asked Czeisler's lab to find ways to help astronauts adjust to life on Mars, where the daysare about 24 hours and 39 minutes long, or 24.65 hours.
This nearly 25-hour day is enough to throw most people into a state of jet lag, which Czeisler has shown interferes with theability to learn, remember things, react quickly and to sleep.
His team tested 12 healthy volunteers aged 22 to 33 who had kept a regular eight-hour sleep and 16-hour wakeful schedule athome for at least three weeks.

Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, they said the natural range of circadian days in just theirgroup was from 23.47 hours to 24.48 hour days -- a full hour's difference.

Tests on animals has shown there is a natural variation. Daylight tweaks the genetically determined circadian rhythm.
"In virtually all cases, the exposure that we get to light ... keeps us in sync with the 24-hour day," Czeisler said in atelephone interview.

But what "astounded" Czeisler was an additional difference in hormone release.
They took blood from these volunteers every hour and found those people with the shorter internal clock released the sleephormone melatonin four to five hours before their usual bedtimes, while those with unusually long internal days did notrelease melatonin until about an hour before bedtime.

Other research has shown that using a computer after dark, working in a brightly lit office or other exposure to bright light canmess up a person's internal clock, making it harder to fall asleep.
So Czeisler's team tested the volunteers in a similar way, using two 45-minute exposures to bright light for 30 days.

The volunteers successfully adjusted to the Martian-length day, Czeisler said.
This could mean that light therapy might help people whose insomnia is caused by having a long- or shorter-than-normalinternal body clock, Czeisler said.

Viewpoint - Very interesting study.

Sylvester Stallone pleaded guilty this morning in a Sydney court to bringing banned muscle-building hormones into Australia, and will be sentenced next week.

The actor didn't appear in court, but said in a letter to Sydney's Downing Center Local Court that he had "made a terriblemistake" because he was "ignorant" about local laws, according to the AP. Stallone was accused of bringing therestricted growth hormones into Oz when a customs search in February turned up 48 vials of Jintropin, a human growthhormone. Then, said a prosecutor yesterday, Stallone threw four vials of the male hormone testosterone out of his hotelroom when customs officials searched it.

The maximum penalty for Stallone's offense could be 5 years in prison and $91,500 in fines, but Stallone will face up to$18,500 for each charge because his case is being heard in local (not federal) court.

A paddlewheel cruise ship ran ground off the Alaska coast early Monday, forcing an evacuation of more than 200 passengersbefore it was able to move again with a Coast Guard escort.
Chief Petty Officer Barry Lane said all passengers had been evacuated from the Empress of the North, and the vessel, with29 crew members aboard, was heading toward Juneau around 7 a.m. There were no reports of injuries.

"The story is shaping up for the good," Lane said.
The Empress of the North had 281 passengers and crew members aboard when it sent out an emergency radio message at12:35 a.m., the Coast Guard said.

When Coast Guard helicopters reached the area, the vessel was listing at the southern end of Icy Strait, about 15 milessouthwest of Juneau, and it began taking on water, said Petty Officer Christopher D. McLaughlin at the Coast Guardbase in Kodiak.
As the ship's pumps worked to remove the water, the passengers were transferred to fishing vessels and other cruise ships inthe area. Those passengers and about 130 others who were taken aboard the Coast Guard cutter Liberty were to betransferred to the Alaska state ferry Columbia and taken to Juneau.

It wasn't immediately clear why the cruise ship ran around, McLaughlin said. It was drizzling in Juneau but the seas wererelatively calm.
The Empress of the North is operated by Majestic America Line of Seattle. The ship has 112 staterooms, a three-storypaddlewheel and galleries featuring Native American masks and Russian artwork, including Faberge eggs, according toits Web site.

Dan Miller, a spokesman for Majestic America, said the grounding occurred on the second day of a seven-day cruise.

The American-built ship is billed by the company as the only overnight paddlewheel vessel in use on Alaska cruises. It also isused on cruises on the Columbia River between Washington state and Oregon.
