The bigger they are, the harder they fall -- especially in the world of celebrity divorce.
Basketball great Michael Jordan, singer-songwriter Neil Diamond and Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg top anewForbes magazine list on Thursday of the 10 most costly divorce settlements of the stars.
Jordan's pending divorce from his wife of nearly 18 years, Chicago bank officer Juanita Vanoy, could end up as themostexpensive in entertainment history, Forbes said, if his estranged spouse walks away with half his fortune.
With Jordan having earned much of his wealth during his marriage, most of it through endorsement deals, Vanoy (who filedfordivorce last year) stands to collect more than $150 million, the magazine said.

A close second would be the estimated $150 million settlement Diamond paid to onetime TV production assistantMarciaMurphey, whom he married in 1969 before his breakthrough album, "Touching You, Touching Me," went gold,Forbessaid.

They divorced in 1996. Diamond later said Murphey, his second wife, was "worth every penny," according to Forbes.
Spielberg's first marriage, to actress Amy Irving, ended in 1989 with his ex-spouse awarded roughly half of thefilmmaker'sfortune, about $100 million, ranking No. 3 on Forbes' list.

The magazine said Irving won that settlement after successfully contesting their prenuptial agreement, reportedly scribbledona napkin, because she had lacked legal representation.
Actor Harrison Ford ranks No. 4 on the list with an estimated $85 million paid to his first wife, Melissa Mathison, whoForbessaid negotiated a piece of his future earnings from films made while they were married.

Fellow screen star Kevin Costner landed in fifth place for an estimated $80 million settlement obtained by his firstspouse,Cindy Silva, whose 16-year marriage to the actor spanned his peak earning years.
Forbes ranked the pending divorce between former Beatle Paul McCartney and ex-model Heather Mills at No. 6, basedonreports suggesting she may collect more than $60 million of Sir Paul's $700 million net worth.

Another rock superstar, Rolling Stone Mick Jagger, got off much easier, giving up a fraction of his estate -- $15 million to$25million -- to Texas supermodel Jerry Hall after he successfully challenged the legality of their 1990 Balineseweddingceremony and obtained an annulment.

Still that sum was enough to land Jagger on Forbes' list at No. 10.
Rounding out the roster are film director James Cameron (No. 7), who paid an estimated $50 million -- half of what heearnedfor "Titanic" -- to settle his divorce from actress Linda Hamilton; Michael Douglas (No. 8) for an estimated$45settlement to his first wife, Diandra; and singer Lionel Richie (No. 9) for an estimated $20 million he paid to hissecondwife, Diane.

Viewpoint - I feel really sorry for these guys. That is a ton of money to lose in a settlement.

Along with spitting, run-down housing and bad manners, add unintelligible English to the list of things organizers of the 2008Beijing Olympics want to ban.

Municipal officials promised on Wednesday to crack down on awkward, Chinese-inflected English, known as "Chinglish," andasked the public to help police bad grammar and faulty syntax.

With 500,000 foreigners expected for the Olympics, taxi drivers who can't speak English -- or signs that mangle the language-- could be an embarrassment and distract from the $40 billion being poured into rebuilding the city for the games.

Throughout the city, examples abound.
A store selling tobacco products advertises: "An Excellent Winding Smoke."
On the floor at Beijing's Capital Airport, a sign reads: "Careful Landslip Attention Security."
On a billboard, this mysterious message: "Shangri-La is in you mind, but your Buffalo is not."
In an elevator, parents are warned: "Please lead your child to tare the life."

Liu Yang, who heads the "Beijing Speaks Foreign Languages Program" for the city government, said 6,500 "standardized"English-language signs were put up last year on Beijing roads. But he acknowledged private businesses werenot following the rules, which were handed to reporters -- a stack of glossy documents weighing 2 pounds.

"We will pass the message on to authorities in the advertising sector," Liu said. "If English translation is needed it must besubject to the standards set forth in the regulations."
Liu said a language hotline may be set up for the games to encourage the public to report nonsense English. China 'sdiplomatic missions abroad are assisting, Liu said, "and our people working in foreign companies are helping with correctusage."

"In the future when we set up new signs in public places in English, we hope all these standards will be followed to avoidmore additional mistakes."

Liu said Beijing taxi drivers must pass an English test to keep their licenses. But he acknowledged most speak onlyChinese, and many are skipping language classes.
"The taxi training courses are not working effectively, and there is a problem of taxi drivers missing classes," he said. "Taxidrivers need to get their licenses renewed every year, and an English test is now part of that that exam. But the exam isnot so difficult."
"Some taxi drivers do speak some English, and that's a big change from the past," Liu added. "But the overall level still needsto improve. Some taxi drivers speak no English; they understand no English."

Despite the problems, Liu said one-third of Beijing's 15 million residents speak some English, a claim that was challenged bya local reporter from China's state-run CCTV.
"I think 5 million is a big number," the reporter told Liu.

Liu stood by the figure, but conceded the vast majority of the English speakers fell into a category he labeled "low level."

"They can have very simply conversations, like: `Who am I? Where am I going?"'

Viewpoint - This is pretty funny. I can't believe they are spending the money on this.

This won't be a pleasant week in the Imus household.

TMZ has learned that Deirdre Imus, wife of Don, has bailed out of two high-profile live appearances on "The View" and "TheMartha Stewart Show," in the wake of Don's "nappy-headed ho" slur that has caused a national furor.

In fact, the whole book tour's been nixed.

A rep for Deirdre's publisher, Simon & Schuster, says that the entire
promotional tour for "Green This! Volume One: Greening Your Cleaning," which was timed to coincide with the book's debutyesterday, has been postponed indefinitely. "Because of the pressure that the Imus family has been under," says therep, "family is her first priority at this time."

This morning, several major advertisers pulled their ad dollars from the Imus show, and he's been suspended for two weeksfrom CBS Radio and MSNBC for his unseemly remarks about the Rutgers University women's basketball team.

Viewpoint - I would not want to be Don hanging out for two weeks with a pissed off wife.

A police search of former astronaut Lisa Nowak's car turned up bondage photos on a computer disk, British currency andpills, according to documents released Tuesday by prosecutors.
A judge last week agreed to unseal some of the documents in the Nowak's case. She is accused of trying to kidnap a rival fora space shuttle pilot's affections.

Nearly all of the 16 images found on the disk depicted bondage scenes, according to a forensic examination report by theOrlando Police Department. Some of the images showed a nude woman while others were drawings.

The documents did not make clear whether Nowak was the woman in the photos or who the disks belonged to.

Also found were nearly $600, 41 British pounds and four brown paper towels with 69 orange pills. State law enforcement aretesting the pills to determine what they are, authorities said.
Investigators also examined two USB drives found in the car that contained family pictures, digital movies and NASA relatedmaterials.

They concluded that information found on the disk or the two USB drives did not have any direct evidence related to theattempted kidnapping, the report said.
Nowak's attorney, Donald Lykkebak, declined to comment Tuesday on the newly released documents.

Nowak was arrested in February after police say she drove from Houston to Florida to confront Air Force Capt. ColleenShipman. Authorities have said Nowak had an affair with Shipman's boyfriend, Bill Oefelein. She pepper-sprayedShipman through a partially lowered car window, an arrest affidavit said.

Police said they found a BB gun, new steel mallet, a knife and rubber tubing in Nowak's possession. Nowak, 43, pleaded notguilty to attempted kidnapping, burglary with assault and battery. NASA released Nowak from the astronaut corps a monthafter her arrest. Her trial has been moved to September.
