Families' eldest boys do best on tests By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID, AP Science Writer
Thu Jun 21, 5:54 PM ET

Boys at the top of the pecking order — either by birth or because their older siblings died — score higher on IQ tests than their younger brothers. The question of whether firstborn and only children are really smarter than those who come along later has been hotly debated for more than a century.

Norwegian researchers now report that it isn't a matter of being born first, but growing up the senior child, that seems to result in the higher IQ scores.

Petter Kristensen and Tor Bjerkedal report their findings in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

It's a matter of what they call social rank in the family — the highest scores were racked up by the senior boy — the first born or, if the firstborn had died in infancy, the next oldest.

Kristensen, of Norway's National Institute of Occupational Health, and Bjerkedal, of the Norwegian Armed Forces Medical Services, studied the IQ test results of 241,310 Norwegian men drafted into the armed forces between 1967 and 1976. All were aged 18 or 19 at the time.

The average IQ of first-born men was 103.2, they found.

Second-born men averaged 101.2, but second-born men whose older sibling died in infancy scored 102.9.

And for third-borns, the average was 100.0. But if both older siblings died young, the third-born score rose to 102.6.

The findings provide "evidence that the relation between birth order and IQ score is dependent on the social rank in the family and not birth order as such," they concluded.

It's an issue that has perplexed people since at least 1874, when Sir Francis Galton reported that men in prominent positions tend to be firstborns more often than would have been statistically expected.

Since then, several studies have reported higher intelligence scores for firstborns, while other analyses have questioned those findings and the methodology of the reports.

While the Norwegian analysis focused on men, other studies have included women, some indicating a birth-order effect and some not.

Frank J. Sulloway of the Institute for Personality and Social Research at the University of California, Berkeley, welcomed what he called the Norwegians' "elegantly designed" analysis.

"These two researchers demonstrate that how study participants were raised, not how they were born, is what actually influences their IQs," said Sulloway, who was not part of the research team.

The elder child pulls ahead, he said, perhaps as a result of learning gained through the process of tutoring younger brothers and sisters.

The older child benefits by having to organize and express its thoughts

There are strange happenings at "The House That Arnold Built," the world famous Gold's Gym of Venice Beach Calif., where photos of the Governator that were snapped during the peak of his gigantor phase were suddenly yanked from the walls! Hasta la vista, baby!

TMZ has learned that employees at the fitness center were recently instructed to remove all photographs of Schwarzenegger from their Walls Of Champions -- without explanation.
But despite rumors of a feud, a scandal and a financial war -- Arnold's pics were just the casualties of, "one of the biggest miscommunications in Gold's history," according to Gold's bigwig Dave Reisman. "The photos were removed so that they could be cleaned and placed together in a photo tribute that we have planned for the 30th anniversary of the film 'Pumping Iron.'"

Kings, Queens and Jokers Featured in New Match Airing on June 25th

June 22, 2007 -- Fans who do not enjoy listening to the banter between the players during a poker match may want to hit the mute button on their remote controls for this one. At times there is so much chatter going on that you’ll think you are watching someone’s home game, let alone a match between some of poker’s more colorful and talented players!

In another first for PAD, this 6-handed match will be comprised of three men and three women, making it truly a battle of the sexes. It just so happens that the men, Howard Lederer, Gabe Kaplan, and Poker After Dark’s own Ali Nejad, are all television poker commentators, so you know they’ll have the gift of gab. But they’ll struggle to get a word in edgewise against the likes of Annie Duke, Vanessa Rousso, and Kristy Gazes.

This will be our first look at “The Voice” behind Poker After Dark, as Ali Nejad brings his unique brand of humor to the match. It should be interesting to hear Ali exchange verbal barbs with Gabe Kaplan, one of the game’s most prolific poker jokers. And while Nejad may not be as well known of a player as the others, he has been playing poker successfully for many years and has the added advantage of having seen how most of these players approach playing under the show’s structure and format.

Kristy “Mixed Games” Gazes also makes her Poker After Dark debut. Kristy was the first woman professional ever to reach the Round of 8 in the National Heads-Up Poker Championship, doing so this year by defeating Clonie Gowen, Isabelle Mercier, and Scott Fischman before eventually succumbing to runner-up Chad Brown. She’s been running well of late, and a victory here would only solidify her reputation as a top-notch player.

Kaplan, Lederer, Duke, and Rousso have all appeared on Poker After Dark in the past, but only Lederer has laid claim to a victory. It will also be the first time Howard squares off against his sister Annie Duke on PAD, adding yet another element of drama to what turned out to be a match that the players obviously enjoyed participating in and one that viewers won’t want to miss.

Brief profiles of all six players follow. The match will begin airing late night Monday at 2:05 AM, June 25, and will continue for five consecutive nights in the same time slot. A special program called the Director’s Cut will air late night Saturday, June 30, at 1:00 AM, right after Saturday Night Live. This show will feature a behind-the-scenes look at the week with highlights and insightful player interviews, and conclude with the winner sitting down with Shana Hiatt to discuss and analyze the match.

Each of the match’s six segments can also be viewed daily on www.nbcsports.com/poker. More detailed information on the players is also available at this website.
